Stockport election results 1976

by Lib Dem team on 30 May, 2010

The latest in my posting of local election results for Stockport from 1973 to 2004.  Not the Liberal’s finest year this one – in fact the party won only a single seat, Edgeley and Cheadle Heath (which now has three Labour councillors).  In Cheadle & Gatley, the Conservatives were way ahead.

The Jeremy Thorpe scandal had been raging in the media, with Thorpe resigning as leader of the Liberal Party on 9th May, four days after these elections took place.

Edgeley & Cheadle Heath was a remarkable result for the Liberals. If you look at the previous year, you’ll see Rick Childs had come an extemely poor third.

It didn’t last! I’ll have to ask around and see if anyone rememebers what local circumstances made the outcome of that contest so odd.

  3. John Hartley says:

    😉

  4. Lisa Shep says:

I think you’ll find it had a lot to do with the fact that he was dedicated and worked really hard for the community he was serving. Hardly surprising for a new boy to come a ‘poor’ third at his first attempt, but being a popular and well known local figure, active both in the local church, and in running a local business which served the community above and beyond, his second attempt was, as you say, a remarkable success. He went on to make a difference to a lot of people. Sometimes, it’s not a case of the contest being odd, more a case of the candidate being the right one.
