Councillors frustrated over flooding culverts

by Lib Dem team on 15 September, 2010

At last night’s Cheadle Area Committee the councillors were frustrated that no council officer came along to explain what was happening to deal with flooding problems on Landybridge Road, Cheadle Hulme and near the junction of Broadway and Wilmslow Road in Cheadle.

In both cases the problems seem to be related to blocked or partially blocked culverts and there’s an issue about whether the Council or United Utilities are responsible for getting it sorted.

(Note that the flooding on Ladybridge Road yesterday was down to a burst water main which was very clearly down to United Utilities and they spent the day repairing it).

We’ve made clear in no uncertain terms that we expect work to be continuing to sort this out, and for an appropriate council officer to come to our next meeting in October with a progress report.

I live on Broadway Avenue in Cheadle, which was one of the flooded roads. In fact, I was the one on Granada TV with my husband. Fortunately, there was no sertious flooding on our road, but it stank.
I phoned the Council the following day to ask them to come and clean our road. Their response was that “there was no flooding in Cheadle, only Cheadle Hulme and Bramhall”! I asked if they had actually seen the news and said that I was the one on it, up to my knees in water. I believe that united Utilities cleaned the road anyway.
It was a blocked culvert to blame within Brookfield Park. Indeed, Direct Line have said we are not a flood risk from the river and have downgraded our insurance.
