Warning of cash machine money thefts in Cheadle and Gatley

Police have warned of a new scam which has led to thousands of pounds being stolen from people taking money out from cash machines in Cheadle & Gatley.

Thieves fit a “money trap” onto the cash machine.  When someone legitimately withdraws money, it goes into the trap and doesn’t emerge.  The innocent user goes away, then the thief comes back, removes the trap and takes the money.

The banks are reimbursing people who have lost money in this way, but please keep a close watch out for any odd attachments on cash machines.  If you see anything that looks suspicious attached to cash machines, call the police on 0161 8725050.

Anyone know what these “Moneytraps” look like?

Some contraption attached to the cash machine?

Or something inserted into the existing machine’s money dispenser slot?

I’ll Google it, but if anyone’s got a link that would be great.

they stick a small trap over the existing money slot, and when the machine dispenses money it gets caught in the trap. I would imagine the people who do this are watching close by so they can then retrieve the trap and cash asap…
