20mph zone for the Broadway area – residents decide

by Lib Dem team on 12 February, 2012

Keith Holloway and the local Lib Dems are asking residents around Broadway, Daylesford Road and Daylesford Crescent if they would like the High Grove Road 20mph zone expanded to include that area.

A teenage boy was recently injured on Broadway when a speeding car came onto the pavement, and residents have often complained about the speed of cars in the area. Although not perfect, there’s strong evidence that 20mph zones do reduce average traffic speeds significantly – by a few miles an hour. That might not sound like a lot, but in an accident it can make the difference between serious injury (or worse) and someone walking away with only minor injuries.

If residents want a 20mph zone across that wider area, the Lib Dems will introduce one.

    Go for it

Yes please! It’s scary how fast some cars go up Broadway after leaving Kingsway.

How about Delamere Road for a 20 mph limit? It does have speed bumps, or sleeping policemen or whatever you call them, but these are virtually useless as when the road was resurfaced, they were rendered less effective as they were altered in size. The main reason for them is ‘traffic calming’ or to make motorists reduce speed to negotiate them but these are so gentle the motorist can virtually ignore them. Give me a 20mph limit rather than a speed bump any day.

Nobody takes notice of the 20 mph speed restriction on High Grove Road.
As far as I can make out one of the main problems on Broadway is parking on both sides of the road!

The accident you refer to, I don’t believe the car actually mounted the pavement!

For information, an eye-witness told me the following: Cars were going in opposite directions down Broadway and both were speeding down the, effective one remaining lane in the centre of the road. In order to avoid each other, one car swerved onto the pavement and the young man was hit.
There are 2 main problems on Broadway; the parking on both sides and the speed at which cars go down Broadway. Both these issues need addressing. I am one of the residents agitating for something to be done. I thought a “chicane” type approach might be the best bet, with some parking restrictions.

I agree with all those who say the main problem on Broadway is the parking on both sides of the road, especially those people who have a drive & still persist in parking on the highway. One solution would be to widen the road or provide parking where the grass verges are at present.

  7. Hasan says:

I agree to expanded the 20mph to inculde Broadway, Daylesford Road and Daylesford Crescent, large number of school children use these roads every day and any reduction in speed [even if average] is welcomed.

IMO, I don’t think 20 mph restrictions make any difference at all. The mentality of drivers you are trying to get to slow down won’t take any notice whatsoever of the speed restrictions and will carry on regardless in their mindless way without any thoughts as to the consequences.

Also – yes I agree with the matter raised re cars parked on both sides thus reducing the road to a single lane capacity. It’s a nightmare – and talking of nightmares with parked cars – Old Hall Road in Gatley is terrible! Something definatley needs to be done there. The cars parked on the side of the shops cause dreadful problems. With cars coming down to proceed onto Gatley Road, cars turning off onto Old Hall Road either have to mount the pavement or cause the whole of the junction to grind to a halt. The problem is quietly getting worse and worse and traffic volumes increase and can be as bad at 2pm as at peak hours.

Would like to know other peoples views on this if it affects any of you.

@ Emma – I have been writing and complaining about parked carrs on Old Hall Road for over 18 months, – I had to swerve as I was approaching Gatley Road, to avoid being hit “dead on” and consequently scraped my car and a parked car. I have repeatedly asked why at least , the parking spaces outside the \Mousam could not be removed and parking on the Horse & farrier side stopped. This is an urgent problem, but all we get is ” yes we know it is a problem” – its not just at rush hours, it is all day…………………

On Friday I observed a small yellow car going down Church Road at more than 50 mph, on Thursday I and the car I was behind were overtaken on St. Annes Road North while doing the limit of 20 mph It is common to observe increasing blatent disregard of the Law whether Travel Law or other aspects. The present Administration has encouraged this with a drastic reduction in Police Officers, enforcement and easing of sentences. Advisory measures only affect the law-abiding. Deter criminals by identifying and punishing them!

put up lcd speed indicators to keep people to 30mph – more effective than a 20mph limit which people will flout on such a big road – they are very frustrating
