Fly-tipping down across the area

by Lib Dem team on 15 February, 2012

At Tuesday’s Area Committee, it was reported that incidents of fly-tipping have fallen.

Across Cheadle, Gatley, Heald Green and the northern part of Cheadle Hulme there were 7 incidents over the last month, compared to 14 last November.

This looks like good news. After the new recycling measures were introduced in Stockport last year, there was some concern that it might result in increased fly-tipping and more rubbish being taken to our recycling centres.

We’ve been monitoring this closely as the new system (which has so far saved Stockport over £5 million) bedded in.

After an initial drop, the recycling percentage at our local centres (Longley Lane for us) has gone back up and overall is now higher than it was when the new system came in. Fly-tipping has also fallen.

Where fly-tipping is reported to the Council, officers investigate the incident and will take action if evidence can be found. For example, a resident in Wythenshawe who’s been dumping household waste at Sainsbury’s in Cheadle Royal will shortly be getting a visit from officers in Manchester and Stockport.

Over the last month, 29 incidents of graffiti have been attended to across the area.

To report fly-tipping or graffiti directly to Stockport Council, call 0161 217 6111 or go to the Stockport Council website and click on “report it”.
