Schools Hill – bus stop move and rumble strips to go ahead

by Lib Dem team on 15 February, 2012

Residents may have seen the poles go up for the new vehicle activated speed signs on Schools Hill – we’re just waiting for the supplier to deliver them now, which we hope will be in the next few days.

At Area Committee on Tuesday, Councillors approved the moving of the bus stop around 50 metres west, next to The Downs. The benefit is that, without losing any parking spaces, the visibility for cars coming out of The Downs will be improved.

We can also confirm that “Rippleprint” surfacing will be located on the downhill stretch of Schools Hill off the Cheadle Royal roundabout. This is a form of rumble strip that vibrates vehicles travelling at speed and, in combination with the speed signs, should make a real difference.

As reported last week, the Lib Dems are campaigning with local residents for a puffin crossing to replace the zebra crossing on Schools Hill.

Do we have statistics that show drivers take mre notice of puffin crossings than pelican ones? In other words if the drivers are approaching too fast, will they stop if they’re not aware till it’s too late that there is a crossing there at all?
On Broadway the crossing is patrolled at school entry and exit times by an adult.
Will Ladybarn do the same thing? Or can the times between red lights be set so as to allow cars to progress whilst on green?
    Thanks

    Hi Estelle,

I don’t have any figures to hand, but my experience is certainly that puffin crossings are obeyed more than zebra crossings. Additionally, the rumble strips and the vehicle activated speed signs will help slow cars down.

I can’t speak for Ladybarn House School, I’m afraid.

With the school on the road, shouldn’t there be a 20 mph zone?

I have just been made aware of the bus stop move on Schools Hill.
I find it absolutely ridiculous to say that the bus stop is in a dangerous location, when, having spoken to a few residents who have resided in this area for fifty years plus, have never had any problems.
In fact, all this will do is make it VERY inconvenient for many of our elderly residents to use public transport,as they will have to walk a further fifty metres to get a bus which only comes once an hour anyway!
Please try to consider the welfare of our community as a whole, not just for the road user.
LEAVE OUR BUS STOP WHERE IT IS!
    Thank you.

    Hi,

The bus stop is not in a dangerous location. The reason for moving it is that people coming out of The Downs have their visibility severely restricted by cars parking right up to the junction – there have been numerous near misses with cars pulling out of The Downs.

By moving the bus stop around 50 yards down the road, we don’t lose any parking spaces, but we greatly improve visibility for cars coming out of The Downs.

I agree it’s a balance – some bus users will be a little further away from the bus stop and others a little nearer, and I accept this isn’t perfect for everyone. But overall, I am convinced that the road safety improvements make the move worthwhile.

    Best wishes,

    Iain
