Dog fouling on the increase

by Lib Dem team on 29 February, 2012

We’re concerned that dog mess seems to have become more of a problem in some areas recently – as we speak to people around Cheadle & Gatley it’s one of the concerns that’s been regularly raised.

In the Cheadle Area (which includes Cheadle, Gatley, Heald Green and parts of Cheadle Hulme) there were 16 complaints about dog mess in January, compared to 3 in December and 6 in November.

Please do let us know where you see a problem.  Most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their pets – it’s the small minority who don’t bother that cause the problem.

  • Bagged dog mess can be put into any bin.  As the excellent Keep Britain Tidy campaign “There’s no such thing as the dog poo fairy” says – any bin will do.
  • Council dog wardens patrol problem areas and do hand out fines where culprits are caught red-handed.

As the Council website says:

If the address or contact telephone number of a known dog fouling offender can be identifed, a warden will attempt to speak to that person within 5 working days to clarify the law regarding dog fouling and provide advise on responsible dog ownership.

text alert system for members of the public to use if and when they witness a dog fouling has also been set up by the Dog Warden Service. If you witness someone allowing their dog to foul you can text the time, date, location and a brief description of the dog and owner to 07624 805 662.  Appropriate action will then be taken by the service.  Text messages to this number cost the standard network rate and no automated reply will be received.

Hi Iain, I’m always on the look out for dog mess to ensure i don’t stand in it. I have two small kids and find myself always scanning the path ahead to avoid poop, the most digusting aspect of our dog loving society. A few inconsiderate owners have in the past let their dogs mess on the verge outside my house, which I stand on to get in my car, not nice! I have noticed more poop recently and will be out to report rather than ignore it now. I can’t say i have ever seen a dog warden though.
