£5 million to bring 461 empty homes back into use

by Lib Dem team on 6 March, 2012

Greater Manchester will receive £5,085,203 to bring 461 empty private sector properties back into use.

The bid was a result of joint work between our ten Greater Manchester authorities (one is Stockport) and 18 Registered Provider partners.

Although empty properties are a characteristic feature in many areas of the country, the North West region is one of the worst affected making up 22% (60,862) of the national figure with Greater Manchester itself accounting for 24, 954 of these. This is at a time when there are over 100,000 households on housing waiting lists across Greater Manchester, clearly demonstrating the need to focus attention on empty properties as well as continuing to build new homes. Long-term empty homes are also a major concern for communities where they lead to a rapid deterioration of streets and neighbourhoods.

This funding will allow us to take a collaborative approach to empty properties across Greater Manchester, and will give us greater certainty over delivery and flexibility to increase the number of homes brought back into occupation. It will also help us to develop approaches to address local circumstances through a range of measures including awareness raising, advice and support.

We are now considering a second bid which focuses on Clusters of Empty Homes Programme – to tackle concentrations of poor quality, empty homes in low demand areas.
