Road safety day includes talk by Schools Hill victim

by Lib Dem team on 15 March, 2012

I went along to the pilot of a new road safety event held at the Armoury on Greek Street, Stockport today.

Students from Cheadle & Marple College came to find out about the realities of road safety – as driver and pedestrian.

Highlights of the day included the Fire Service turning on en masse to cut up a car – the doors and roof all came off as the students watched, whilst one of the firemen explained what was happening, along with lots of information about how people end up trapped in crashed cars in the first place.

Another highlight was Hannah Myers talking about being the victim in a road accident. Hannah, 18, was hit on the Schools Hill zebra crossing by a 21 year-old female driver last November. The car that hit her was doing at least 40mph and, though badly injured and in a coma for several days, Hannah has made a remarkable recovery. I was not the only person moved by Hannah’s bravery in explaining not only how the accident happened but also how it has affected her life.

Hopefully the students who came along got something from the day – and hopefully this is just the first of many similar road safety events. Thank you to the Police, the Fire Service, the road safety teams at Rochdale and Stockport Councils and everyone else who worked to make this pilot event a success.
