M60 sliproad improvements – what’s happening and when

by Lib Dem team on 23 March, 2012

A-one+, the managing agent contractor for the Highways Agency, have sent us more details on the works taking place on the M60 slip road. When the work is completed (hopefully June) the changes can be made to the Kingsway lights to improve the right turn from Cheadle and Gatley.

This junction is subject to heavy traffic congestion during rush hour with traffic exiting the M60 junction 3 clockwise and anticlockwise slip roads merging to form one exit slip road. This traffic then merges with two lanes of the southbound A34 Kingsway. Presently traffic on the M60 J3 slip road queues back many hundreds of metres during rush hour as does the traffic on the southbound A34 Kingsway.

There is a major project planned to improve this junction with the provision of an extra lane on the M60 junction 3 within the boundaries of the current slip road and traffic signals at the junction with the A34 Kingsway. There is also going to be work taking place on the M60 anticlockwise carriageway between junctions 4 -2 where the hard shoulder is going to be utilised to provide an extra running lane to ease congestion. Details can be viewed at http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/34712.aspx where you can register for regular updates as they occur. Within the ‘impact on your journey’ page you will find details of the signed diversions.

To facilitate this major project British Telecom are required to move an existing chamber and strengthen cable ducts that lie within the carriageway of the exit slip road near to the A34 Kingsway.

On Sunday night, 25th March 2012 we will be installing traffic management at the location. The M60 junction 3 clockwise and anticlockwise slip roads will be closed whilst protection measures are put in place. This closure will be between 10pm Sunday 25th March and 5am Monday 26th March 2012. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place. The southbound A34 Kingsway will be reduced to one lane from approximately 300 metres prior to the M60 junction 3 exit slip road.

Once the traffic management is in place I’d encourage motorists to consider using alternative routes while the work takes place, or to allow extra time for their journeys. Anyone who regularly drives in the area will know how congested the roads can get, so I hope people will understand the need to carry out this work.

I’ve read that the long term plan is to have traffic lights from the Motorway onto the A34. Can someone explain if this is true and how on earth this will help congestion?

I use this route every day and although there are problems, its nothing that some widening wouldn’t help. Most people ignore the white hatching anyway and this seems to keep the traffic flowing as best it can.

I’m a little concerned about the changes to the M60 anticlockwise carriageway. It’s often difficult with the present layout to join the eastbound main carriageway at junction 3 or leave the eastbound M60 at junction 2. This is because the approach angle of the on-slip makes it awkward to see traffic in the lane one wishes to join. The text of the planned “improvement” suggests these problems could be exacerbated by increasing the number of lanes to be negotiated.

Well the changes have taken place but the congestion is worse than it was before the changes. Complete waste of money. When will this country ever learn? The traffic from J3 of the M60 onto the A34 southbound is still queuing back onto the M60. The traffic joining the M60 eastbound from the A34 northbound is now queuing back to the traffic lights at the crossroads with Gatley and not moving as it did before. I note the A34 lanes northbound are going to be re-organised but that will not resolve the queue onto the M60 – the middle lane will become the longest queue rather than the inside lane. Absolute joke and complete nonsense to say the improvements would ease congestion and cut travel times. The so called experts need to look at the traffic signals at J3 and A34 southbound as there is too much priority to A34 southbound traffic and not enough to those coming off the M60.

  4. I completely agree with the above. Spend millions to imrove a junction and actually make it worse for everybody, only the UK could achieve such an accolade!

The queing traffic off the M60 Eastbound and Westcound onto the A34 is now worse than ever thanks to the new road layout and lights. Eastbound is especially dangerous as traffic is taking up the slow lane to get off the motorway.

    Excellent job!
