A near miss on Schools Hill

by Lib Dem team on 3 April, 2012

We’re very glad that the campaign Keith has run with local residents to get a proper puffin crossing on Schools Hill looks to be successful, with Sainsbury’s verbally agreeing to fund the crossing.

Keith and I had a near miss on the crossing that shows just why we need to replace it.

We were on Schools Hill yesterday evening – in daylight – crossing from the Bruntwood Park side to The Downs. A car slowed down to stop for us so we started crossing. Half way across we had to stop as the car coming the other way was showing no sign of slowing down. He clearly saw us, but decided to carry on driving, leaving us stranded in the middle of the road.

Luckily we did stop and got across safely, but if we’d been distracted and carried on walking across, I’m not at all sure the driver could have stopped in time.

Glad you finally realised this. Pity it took two near fatal accidents. YOu need a speed camera as well both ways up and down.

    Hi Theo,

The work with Schools Hill has been ongoing for some years, and I’m very glad that we’ve been able to secure the funding (in large part from Sainsbury’s, which of course wasn’t available previously) to make these latest set of improvements.

Hi, Ian, but the improvements to date do not seem to be working, as you have just found out, as I have said before many times, there is a need for speed camera’s, for everyones safety.

    Hi Bob,

The next step is the Puffin Crossing that we’ve secured funding for – that will make a big difference. We will look into speed cameras – those are managed at a Greater Manchester level and there are quite strict rules on where you can put them.

    iain,

as i have mentioned previously, your experience is exactly what we face everyday crossing schools hill as a resident on the road and a parent at the school. whilst we are waiting for the crossing, i think a sign should be put on the lights at the crossing warning users that they should wait until both lanes of traffic have come to a halt as your experience is very common..

This does tie in with the boorish behaviour of drivers going in and out of Lady Barn School, who seem to believe the pavement is theirs. Speaking as a Schools Hill resident who has been knocked by one such driver and endangered every time I walk past at the wrong time of day, I think some regulation is needed there, together with a pavement opposite the school.

Can anyone clarify whether the signs that have been installed are activated by every driver, or only those already speeding?

  8. paul renshaw says:

dear les- i find your remarks unnecessary and offensive regrading lady barn parents… the pavement isn’t the issue- the issue is people disregarding pedestrians already on the crossing- from memory, you seem to enjoy knocking the school- the wrong time of day as you put it- ie drop off and pick up – is actually the safest time to cross since the traffic is very slow. i suggest you get past your prejudice about the private school you have chosen to love near…
