Stockport jobs ahead of the pack again

by Lib Dem team on 19 April, 2012

Stockport has been ahead of the pack on jobs for some time, and the latest unemployment figures see that trend continuing. However, youth unemployment remains a problem here as elsewhere and we are keenly awaiting the Lib Dem Youth Contract to start up fully.

o The number of people in Stockport claiming Jobseekers allowance decreased by 1.9% month-on-month
o At March 2012, Stockport had a JSA claimant rate of 3.5%
o Stockport experienced a month-on-month decrease (1.9%) which was larger than the average for Greater Manchester (0.9% decrease), North West (1.2% decrease) and the UK (1.1% decrease)
o The 16-24 and 18-24 age groups have both experienced month-on-month increases of 4.9% respectively
o Stockport’s overall claimant rate still stands at 3.5% compared to a rate of 8.1% for 18-24 year olds
o Job vacancies have decreased month-on-month by 0.2% across the Borough, compared to increases in Greater Manchester (3.6% increase) and the North West (0.4% increase)
o However Stockport has ratio of 0.29 job vacancies per JSA claimant, which is higher than Greater Manchester (0.20), North West (0.21) and England (0.21)

why can’t we post comments to the article about council tax? The last increase of 3.4% was twice the national average yet Mark Hunter boasted it was less than inflation!

  2. Iain Roberts says:

I’m glad to say, Bruce, that Lib Dem Stockport has frozen council tax for two years running now (before that the increase was indeed below inflation – it was 3.25%, not 3.4%).

No Lib Dem council is increasing council tax this year, many Conservative and Labour ones are.

A quirk of the system on posting comments to the other article, I’m afraid – it’s because it’s syndicated.

  3. Phil Johnson says:

I am concerned that age discrimination legislation now allows the over 65’s to hold on to jobs which would previously have been released, possibly easing youth unemployment.
The 65 year old gets a pay rise on his 65th birthday by no longer paying NI.
Double Whammy for the State, less revenue from the OAP and more JSA for the youngster.
