Decision time for Gatley Green

by Lib Dem team on 25 May, 2012

Before the local elections, the councillors approved changes to Gatley Green including improvements to the paving around the shops on both sides of Church Road, making it more difficult for vehicles to drive the wrong way along Gatley Green and blocking off the cut-through behind the war memorial.

The changes then have to be advertised for a month, which has been done. More objections have been received which means the scheme comes back to Cheadle Area Committee next Tuesday for a final decision.

Council officers have spent time looking at how many vehicles use the cut-through (not a large number, even at peak times) and other traffic movements. We’ve also looked carefully at the other objections.

The Lib Dems have worked with local residents over the last few months to ensure the proposals are right for Gatley and are supported by the majority of residents in the Gatley Green area. We continue to support the proposals to enhance Gatley Green.

Incorporating the war memorial section into the main area should remain an important consideration in enhancing the area. It has always felt “cut off” which just doesnt feel right to me – remembrance of the community’s war dead remains a proper concern at a time when men and women are still losing their lives in their country’s service.

I do not see why we should be deprived of the 4 or so parking places that the cut off povides. Will the waiting restrictions infront of the church affect weddings and funerals?

  3. Iain Roberts says:

    Hi Trevor,

Overall one parking space will be lost – the long ends of the cut-off mean that the other parking spaces will be replaced. I think losing one parking space is worthwhile for the benfits provided by the plan (and a clear majority of those who live on the Green and are most affected by parking issues agree with that).

The waiting restrictions in front of the church will not apply to wedding or funeral vehicles.

  4. Robert Taggart says:

    Back the proposals.
As for the parking concerns – Limo’s and Hearses must be allowed to park for some time – half an hour ? – outside Saint James.
As for motorists more generally = a bloody pain !
