Lib Dems launch Dog Mess campaign

by Lib Dem team on 8 June, 2012

The Lib Dem team have been out and about putting up posters and stickers reminding people that dog poo must be disposed of correctly.

As the Keep Britain Tidy campaign says “any bin will do”. It doesn’t need to be a dog bin: bagged dog mess can go in any litter bin or in your black bin at home, but the one thing you can’t do is leave it.

The majority of dog owners are responsible and clean up after their pets, but there’s still a minority who refuse to, and put the health of others at risk as a result.

    Very welcome campaign.

How may I obtain posters? May I put one up outside my house?

Any advice on what to do if we spot an offender?

There’s a number you can text to report it straight to the dog wardens – cant remember what it is but it’s on the council website.

Is there anything else that can be done? Posters on their own just don’t work.

Thanks Ruth – there is indeed the number which we’ve put here before (see http://www.stockport.gov.uk/services/environment/envhealth/animalwelfare/dogwardenservice/dogfouling/dogfoulingcomplaints ).

Signs and enforcement together are part of the solution, but the real answer is for not cleaning up after a dog to be more socially unacceptable than it is now.

Great idea if it can be enforced. What about so called ‘unadopted’ footpaths ie around Bulkeley, New Hay and Newboult Roads? I am feed up with trying to negotiate piles of dog poo every week when I put my bins out.

It’s interesting that this applies to only to dogs. I have a small garden which receives regular deposits from cats. I work in the assessment of contaminated land and frankly the risk to human health from animal excrement far outways the majority of risks i have seen arising from contaminated land! The paths also seem to be suffering from splattering of pigeon faces, another nusuiance. This week this kids came in with catmess all over their hand as the ball they were playing catch with had landed in a heap. It’s ulterly infuriating, having to avoid animal fouling in the street and in your own gardens, in 2012 we should have much tighter controls. I’m off to buyer a ‘supersoaker! Cats watch out!
