Gatley Carrs gets its Green Flag

Congratulations to the Gatley Carrs Conservation Group and Stockport Council’s Parks people: Gatley Carrs now has a Community Green Flag to its name, to add to last year’s Green Pennant.

Cllr Kevin Hogg presented the flag. As well as being the councillor in charge of parks, Kevin used to play on the Carrs as a child more than fifty years ago and has many memories of how it used to be (we get fewer dead dogs left on the Carrs these days, apparently).

Thanks for the publicity Iain. We all enjoyed giving cllr. Hogg a conducted tour of the carrs. He didn’t recognise the place – spent most of the time saying, I don’t remember that! – but agreed it was a big improvement. Mind you most sights are an improvement on discarded dead dogs!

I would have loved to have come along with the kids to show our support, but a dog well known to both Stockport Wardens and a plethora of local dog walkers has made Gatley Carrs a no-go zone for me and the kids. Ironically the dog in question appears in two of these photos with her female owner wearing a striped top – it has a muzzle order because of the amount of ‘incidents’ it has been involved in – and here she is again – no muzzle. We now have to walk our dogs elsewhere because of this one irresponsible owner, where’s the justice in that?

When anyone tells you that Gatley isn’t what it used to be you can always be thankful for small mercies!

Reply to Andy Dunbar. We are very sorry that you feel unable to come down to the Carrs because of one dog. We are also aware that she should be muzzled but fortunately the owner now keeps the dog on a lead and we haven’t had any problems recently.

We are also sorry that we cannot be more helpful but I am sure you understand that we have no jurisdiction over who can bring their dogs for a walk on Stockport MBC land.

Thanks Paula – I do understand the lack of influence ANY of us have over an owner that ignores rules put in place by Stockport Dog Wardens. But I don’t ever want my young children to witness the agressive and antisocial behaviour that this particular dog is capable of and – according to the Warden for our area – has actually carried out against numerous poor dogs. The muzzle order was there for the well being of other dogs, not the owner’s inconvenience.

I’ve lived in Gatley for 13 years and always walked my dogs on the Carrs, now I have young children I can’t run the risk of us bumping into that anti social nuisance. I’ve had to join a ‘breakaway’ group of owners that have had the displeasure of meeting Suki who now walk on Gatley Hill as a safe alternative.

I am sure that nothing I say will make you have another go at visiting Gatley Carrs but I can assure you that Suki is much quieter – witness the photos. where she is with other dogs, some she had never seen before. Age makes a difference to us all, dogs included. However I am not making excuses for the owners not doing what they were told to do.

I repeat that I am sorry you have been turned off visiting such a pleasant area because of your experience, however there can be problem dogs on Gatley Hill too!
