Hall Street Green celebrates opening

Along with Pam King, Keith Holloway and John Pantall, I was absolutely thrilled to see the grand opening of the new Hall Street Green in Cheadle (behind St Mary’s Church). Stockport Mayor Wendy Meikle was on hand to cut the ribbon and declare the Green officially open.

The three-year project has been driven by local residents – ably led by Penny Allwork – and supported by Stockport Council. A grant of over £40,000 was raised to transform the Green into a lovely local feature and a real asset for the area.

Hall Street Green was created in about 1970 when two old streets of terraced houses were demolished; but it was never an area of great beauty. Thanks to the hard work of residents, all that’s changed.

Seems a very nice green area, but who is going to pay for the upkeep? Will it come out of the councils budget? We do have more than our fair share of green spaces in Cheadle, can the council afford the upkeep of them all, when it is talking of having to save millions this year?

I don’t think the improvements significantly change the cost of maintenance, which is shared between the work done by the Friends group and the Council.

We used to live in Hall Street and I am delighted the Green is still viewed by the residents as a “special” area. The Council already maintained it to a certain extent. I suspect what Iain says is true – it’s unlikely to cost more than before.

In reply to Bob, the Council will continue to do what they have been doing (cutting grass, tending beds, emptying bins etc.) and the Friends will tend the new beds (e.g. herb wheel) and areas added that enhance the green. The Friends will come to an agreement with the Council about that, so there is no extra cost involved.
Also the Lottery have awarded us £3000 ‘Sustainability Grant’ to keep interest in the green, so there will be more events on the Green. Look at the notice board and web site for more information.
