Stockport Market packed for first Christmas special of the season

by Lib Dem team on 8 December, 2012

I’ve spent the morning at Stockport Market on the first of three weekends of big events in the run-up to Christmas.

Today we had the indoor and outdoor market, Dickens-themes heritage market, Stockport dungeon, brass band, carol singers, Teenage Market and more.

BBC Radio Manchester spent the morning with us speaking to people about everything that’s going on. In my interview I talked about the free parking on Sundays between now and Christmas, free parking after 2pm in the week before Christmas and the free Metroshuttle bus (number 300) that goes around the town centre.

The Teenage market was set up in 8 Market Square (and we came away with a really nice print), and there were lots of crafts, food and drink stalls .

Tomorrow (9th December) is Vintage Village at the market, then next Saturday (15th) is the Winter Wassale beer festival and the Sunday before Christmas (23rd December) is the Stockport Market Christmas Fair with ice rink, pony rides, music and entertainment.

And remember…free parking in all Council car parks for the Vintage Village and the Christmas Fair!

Here are some photos of today’s events – plus one of me in the stocks.

I went especially with my wife to see what Stockport had to offer at Christmas and can only say that I was mightily disappointed. The market had very little in the way of Christmas things and most of the stalls reminded me of a car boot sale. I was hoping to avoid the crowds in Manchester but will be going next weekend for some Christmas cheer. Sorry but this is a poor effort

The market be very much a part of our weekly – Saturday – shopping routine.
There was more on offer this time, but, no Mulled Wine for sale / consumption – or did tha miss something ?

Phil, a word of warning about the Mancy Christmas markets – elbow pads advisable ! Also, if like moi you like a festive tipple – Mancy is MANCY ! Whereas at many other such markets (York, Skipton, Lincoln, Knaresborough, Grassington…) you can purchase (in a polystyrene cup usually) and consume (on the street) Mulled Wine – at Mancy all such tipples require a deposit of £2.00 for a pot mug and can only be consumed within a tiny designated area. Patronising does not begin to describe this, or, is it a poor reflection upon the yokels of that place when intoxicated ?
    “Hick” !

I agree that the Manchester markets will be packed but at least there will be an atmosphere. All we saw yesterday in Stockport were a couple of people in period costume, i agree no jostling as hardly anyone was there. Generally Stockport has become a ‘sad’ shopping experience and they even charge parking at Christmas! If it wasn’t for Primark the place would be dead
