Council honours Stockport’s first Olympic medal winner

Iain Roberts and Olympic medallist Alan Newton

Stockport Council last night honoured Alan Newton, Stockport’s first olympic medal winner.

Alan, who was in the council chamber with his wife Barbara, won a bronze medal for cycling in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, sixty years ago.  His achievement was largely forgotten until this year when Council officers tracked him down to play a key part in our amazing sporting year.

I met Alan when he was handing out prizes to school children at our Olympic BeInspired event at the Stockport Plaza; and again opening our new Connect2 cycle route at Chadkirk.

In a year of sporting achievement in Stockport (20 olympians and paralympians bringing back nine medals to the borough) it’s a real pleasure to be able to honour someone who’s not only part of our sporting history, but went on to train and encourage further cycling development, playing an important part in making Greater Manchester the centre of cycling excellence it is today.

The new Community Centre and sporting facilities to be built as part of the Blackstone Field development in Offerton will be named the “Alan Newton Centre” in Alan’s honour.
