Barnes Hospital development presentation

by Lib Dem team on 16 January, 2013

Last night saw the public presentation of plans to develop the Barnes Hospital site in Cheadle.  Unfortunately we local councillors were unable to attend as it clashed with Cheadle Area Committee.

Although we saw the presentation back in December, we would have liked to see it with residents and get more of a feel for people’s initial thoughts.  If you were at the exhibition yesterday, do let us know what you think!

Here is the presentation material giving more information on the proposals – to convert the hospital itself into flats and build more houses and apartments around it on the site (so-called “enabling development” that allows the whole thing to stack up financially). In total around 300 new properties are planned, with a vehicle entrance on Kingsway and pedestrian/cycle access also to Mill Lane.

The redevelopment of this (almost) derelict building is to be encouraged.

But 300 new dwelling is significant for what is quite a small area. Would the standard of housing be comparable to the surrounding houses? What proportion of low cost social housing is included (25%?). Also a concern is traffic from the development particularly that trying to get to Manchester – it appears the only routes would be via Gatley or Cheadle both of which are already very congested at peak times.

    Overall problematic.

Thanks – those are valid questions that will need to be considered as part of any planning application.

Can’t come soon enough, criminal how this Grade II listed building has been left to rot. I am concerned about the number but it’s to be expected if they are taking such a project on. As long as the building is saved and the remaining buildings are sympathetic to the surroundings. Fingers crossed.

  4. KC says:

I’ve noticed that they have started felling tree’s around the building on the M60 side.

Can you confirm that this is allowed and why this is happening?

    Good Afternoon,

Would it be possible for you to tell me who the main contractor is undertaking the works at Barnes Village.
We are a stockport based joinery business, employing local labour. We have a specific manufacturing bench hand joiner section that produced a large amount of bespoke products especially working closely with Stockport Heritage. Also we have approx 40 site joiners on the books that work out on sites undertaking the supply and installation of all joinery products.
I would appreciate it if you could give me a contact name and number on site to speak to.

    Regards

    Phil Hall

      Hi Phil,

I don’t have that information I’m afraid, but if you take a look at the stockport.gov.uk website and find the planning application there’ll be contact details for the agent and you should be able to track it down from that.
