Broadway 20mph zone gets go-ahead

by Lib Dem team on 16 January, 2013

Councillors at Cheadle Area Committee voted to give the Broadway 20mph zone the go-ahead.

This was a Lib Dem campaign, started last spring as a result of safety concerns around the Broadway area. In the consultation, 80% of residents told the Council they agreed with the scheme.

Although the Police don’t enforce 20mph zones in Greater Manchester, the evidence is that they can reduce speed significantly – which can be the difference between a minor injury and something much more serious.

The new zone will include Broadway, Daylesford Road, Daylesford Crescent and the roads off, linking up to High Grove Road which already has a 20mph speed limit in place.

Is there a good reason why Schools Hill could not be included as a 20mph zone, as there have been more accidents here than on any other road in the neighbourhood in recent years?

Iain without enforcement of some sort it’s really lost money investment wise.
We still see cars doing 50mph down High grove Rd

As a resident of High Grove Road I totally agree with Alan – there has been no difference in the speed of the cars that are usually using the road as a short cut. Perhaps a one way system would help?

All the evidence we have is that 20mph zones do make a difference. They certainly don’t stop the occasional mad driver (nor does police enforcement) but overall they cut average speeds by a few miles an hour. That may not be something I’d be able to see looking at cars going past, but could be the difference between a minor and serious accident – or avoiding an accident altogether.

Ruth – yes, Schools Hill is a different class of road – our efforts there are to slow traffic down to 30mph and provide safe crossing locations.

It’s more than the occasional mad driver. I walk the dog down Broadway most nights. I’ve seen people hit at least 60 down there many a time. It’s regarded as a bit of a race track for the usual boy racers who tear around Cheadle due to the width of the road. They have no intention to sticking to the speed limit at the moment, without any enforcement I doubt this will have any effect. My wife and I have always said that it is an accident waiting to happen, especially being next to a school. Speed humps or cameras are needed, this is just a small and in my view an insignificant step.
