Inspiring our young people to try different sports

by Lib Dem team on 14 February, 2014

I had the pleasure to attend an event on Wednesday where hundreds of Primary school kids got to try new sports – and hopefully will give some of them a go by joining clubs.

This photo would have even better taken half a second later when the instructor kicked the wood into two pieces.

The event was sponsored by Sky and volunteers who work in the call centre in Stockport took a day out to work with the kids. A class came along from each of six local primary schools and all the action took place at Avondale leisure centre and Stockport Academy.

The kids got to try different sports including futsal, boxing, zumba, tae kwon do and basketball. The emphasis of the day is all about having fun and participation. The sporting expertise is provided by local clubs, and the children all get vouchers to start attending the clubs afterwards.

I can well remember when my son was at primary school, sport was often about football or nothing, and it’s really important that the kids have the opportunity to try different sports and find what the like. If it’s football, that’s great but there’s so much more out there.
