Tatton Development Brief signed off – CPO campaign builds

by Lib Dem team on 28 March, 2014

This week I signed off an updated Development Brief for the Tatton site – the next step in our campaign to get the site sorted.

Last week we launched our campaign to CPO the Tatton. We’ve no objection at all to the current owners bringing forward a scheme, but more than a year after we started talking to them about their proposals we’re still waiting for it to happen.

A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) is a route out: the Council identifies another developer and agrees a scheme. It then buys the site for its current market value and immediately sells it on to the new developer, who gets on with it.

We know we can’t have complete control over what gets developed on the site – and whatever happens, it will need to make money – but we’ll be able to get it developed and doing something useful.

The  Development Brief is the next step. It sets out what uses the Council is looking to bring forward for the site, so developers get an idea of what we’re expecting from them.

Thank you to everyone who’s already returned the slip from our Gatley Keeping in Touch leaflet supporting the campaign – we really appreciate it.

It’s great that something is happening, I hope that some momentum can be maintained to finally get someone to do something with the site.

Is the development brief a list of what is and what isn’t allowed to be developed on the Tatton site, Iain ?

Can we view it online or is it a private document only for developers ?

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Hi Mike – the development brief isn’t an absolute guide (it doesn’t replace the planning rules) but tells the developers what sort of developments are likely to get permission.

It’s a public document – it should be published shortly and I’ll put it up here.

Gatley Keeping in Touch leaflet ? – WHERE ??

Hoping any plans involve the demolition of this oversized / out of keeping eyesore.

17 years since it was closed – what a farce

  5. Iain Roberts says:

Nearer 13 Bruce – this is the problem when we’re dealing with private property; it’s rarely easy or quick, but we don’t give up.

  6. Paula Isherwood says:

It was January 2001. I remember it only too well and in case we might forget there’s the sign over the entrance to jog our memory. Or just rub our collective noses in it!

  7. Trevor McLean says:

What we need is a car park, not more development

  8. Geoff S says:

‘Oversize, out of keeping eyesore’ – Robert !! The facade and original entrance lobby is in my opinion iconic and has very happy memories for many Gatley residents. Are you suggesting demolition and the erection of a sad looking shops/flats block such as that opposite Gatley Green? NO! NO! NO! Keep this frontage, bring back the 1st floor cafe and incorporate a decent size meeting room for all to use – and even hire out to various local community groups. This is a conservation area and lets not forget it please. Many years ago we lost a beautiful black & white, thatched cottage at the other end of our village on Park Road to be replaced by offices fronting Stonepail Close – call this progress? No – more like scant regard for what we have and not how we can retain and incorporate something of beauty.

  9. Bryan says:

    Geof
For the life of me I’ve no idea why we would want to keep the facade. It’s scruffy and tired and in no way warrants preserving IMHO. Knock it down with the rest of the building, which would give a decent development half a chance.

  10. Robert Taggart says:

    GS – Demolish this eyesore – AYE ! AYE !! AYE !!!
Community Building ? – the Tatton ?? – we already have enough such ‘expenses’ to maintain – Gatley Hill House – remember that ? A piece of heritage well worth saving AND serving a purpose – unlike that overblown former cinema monstrosity !

  11. Julie Kingdon says:

It would be nice if the building could be re-opened as a cinema & coffee shop/bar similar to the Curzon in Knutsford.

  12. John hartley says:

Dash it all! I find myself agreeing with Mr Taggart again – surely there’s drugs I can take to limit this happening too often.

He’s right about Gatley Hill House. The community building is already there. A building with a great history attached to it and one that always seems to be very much underused.
