Gatley Carrs Tree and Bird Walk – all welcome

by Lib Dem team on 14 August, 2014

On Monday, 18 August at 6.30 pm Gatley Carrs Conservation Group will be holding their first tree walk on Gatley Carrs, which will be combined with a bird walk. John Pollard will supervise the tree walk and Peter Owen the bird walk. Meet on the Car Park at the end of Brookside Road.

This is the first time GCCG have hosted a tree walk and John is hoping not only to point out the large variety of trees but will also explain the history of the trees which have been planted on Gatley Carrs for the past 100 years.

Because of the great changes in the use of Gatley Carrs it is not surprising that we have many very old trees, some planted in the last thirty years and some very new ones. It is possible that another tree walk could take place in winter when we will have only the shape of trees to distinguish the various variety of trees and we look forward to your feedback on the subject.

What a great idea. It is such a shame that I will be away. I look forward to the one in the autumn/winter. I hope it won’t be in November as I will be away again!

It is good to know that you are interested Jennifer. Having never organised a tree walk before we were wondering how many people would be keen to know more. I’ve been told that we have over 40 different types of tree on the Carrs so there’s a lot to learn. All we need is better weather than we are getting today!

Pity it’s too short notice for me too. I’m already committed at the time of the walk. I do hope you are well supported and I have a future opportunity to join in. More notice next time please.

Friends of Hall Street Green, behind the Church in Cheadle, have a bat talk and walk on Tuesday 19th. 7:30 for the talk in the Drill Hall, 8:30 for the walk/look for bats.

During Gatley Festival I was re-introduced to The Carrs after many tens of years by simply waiting for the Village walk to start in the car park. Since then I have strolled round on my own several times and really enjoyed the greenery and water life. I can’t come tonight but I am sure that it will inspire others to enjoy The Carrs and emphasize its future protection.

The problem with giving more notice of a walk is that people then forget – you can’t win. Perhaps we could do an early notice and a later one! Glad to know that people are enthusiastic though.

By the way, although a large crack willow split and fell yesterday it shouldn’t affect our walk tonight. The irony of the name has not been lost on us.

Hope it all goes well, Paula. I’ve got some walking difficulties at present so can’t make it but hope to do a future one if there is another.

By the by, I recall there being talk of a “community orchard” being planted on the Carrs. Was there ever any progress on what seemed like a great idea?

  9. Paula Isherwood says:

Yes John. The community orchard was planted 18 months ago. All the fruit trees are OK, at the moment, and most have borne fruit this year. There is a possibility that we may enlarge it a bit- another half dozen or so – in the winter.

Glad you think the idea was a good one.
