Gatley post office moves as Postmaster David retires after 31 years

by Lib Dem team on 12 September, 2014

This week saw the end of an era in Gatley as sub-postmaster David Edge retired after 31 years of service to the village.

Well-wishers gathered at the post office on Friday morning, before the new post office opened in Gatley News in the afternoon.

Being part of the newsagents, the new Post Office will have longer opening hours (7am – 6pm Monday to Satuday and 7am – 12.30pm on Sunday).

We wish David a long and enjoyable retirement.

He will be very much missed – all the more so with ‘Mr Smiley’ next door taking over !

    Wishing DE well.

  2. Claire Healey says:

The end of an era. Thank you David, you will be missed.

  3. Paula Isherwood says:

Great photo. of a wonderful man.

  4. Ruth Hill says:

David was given a WONDERFUL send-off and everyone who was there on Friday said how much they will miss him. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him to do. It really is the end of an era and despite all the smiles, people were all feeling a little sad. Sharon, who organised the whole send-off, did a fantastic job.

Apparently nothing was ever too much trouble for the retiring postmaster – oh except that he opened the post office to suit himself rather than the paying customers who have afforded him a very nice income over the years.
All the best of good luck to the new postmaster who at least is opening the post office in line with modern living i.e. seven days a week with longer hours each day – just the sort of customer service this village needs, in all areas not just the post office – wake up Gatley retailers!!

    HARRY BULL,

WHAT A LOAD OF BULL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Robert Taggart says:

To be fair to ‘Bully’ – the closing of the office at mid-day on Wednesday and Saturday as well as for an hour after lunchtime each day it was open – WAS annoying.

So yes – the new opening hours will be much more appealing, but, ‘Mr Smiler’ and his ‘motley crew’ will find it difficult to be so pleasant !

  8. Harry Bull says:

Lesley – perhaps you will have the courtesy to acquaint us all of your surname just in case someone wants to make a remark about your name rather than the subject in hand.

  9. Glyn Jones says:

I called in at 9.30am and It was good to see David already enjoying his retirement and being baffled by the magician. A pity that Cindy -also retiring – was not there.

  10. Paul says:

David was a nice guy & part of the Gatley furniture! I wish him well and he will be missed.
I wish the new chap next door would make an effort to cheer up always seems miserable.
