As you may know, Stockport Council is working on a development for the Bridgefield site (the area between Prince’s Street and the motorway in the town centre) centred around a new multiplex cinema.
This gives an idea as to what it’s going to look like (click on a picture for a closer look).

Another missed opportunity – to smarten up BIG TIME – Stocky town centre.
YES – the new development looks fine, BUT – why do those ‘shanty town’ premises which line Princes Street have to remain in place ?
Between Merseyway and the Motorway there be no buildings of architectural or historical interest – this area should be treated as a ‘blank canvas’ – and comprehensively redeveloped.
The swan with two necks isnt part of a shanty town and needs to stay.
Oh yes it is – cheers !
mild – agree, no plans to do anything to change that. The Swan with two necks should stay.
Is the cinema complex at Grand Central to be demolished?
Hi Sue – yes.
Who will run the car parks? If they are privately run, the only way to enforce “fines” for incorrect parking is via breach of contract through the courts, which they rarely do – private parking owners have no right to “fine”.
Thus people parking improperly in disabled bays, etc. are rarely pursued as the cost of the court action is usually greater than the “fine”.
So I would like to see the car parks operated by the council (who do have the power to impose a fine), or a perpetual binding obligation on whoever operates it to pursue all cases of improper parking in a disabled space through the courts, with a penalty of some (non-trivial) proportion of their revenues as the cost to them of not doing so.
If they choose not to pursue non-payment/overstay, that would be their loss and would only really affect their bottom line, but failure to pursue parking in a disabled bay without a badge has specific impact on people who need those bays.
Will the surface parking spaces be disabled? Ground-level disabled spaces are immensely useful as lift problems (up or down) can be overcome by able-bodies users, but not by the disabled.
This development will be an asset to the town centre, but, as mentioned by RT – you will have to pass through the shanty town that is Princes Street.
Quite simply this be but a ‘sticking plaster’ over a sore – it does nothing to close the ‘open wound’ that is Merseyway !
Hi Dr C – you’re right to raise Princes Street, and if you look at the full plans you’ll see improving Princes Street is a key part of the project.
Can you tell me what work is going on in the unearthed cellars at Brigefield
Hi – the archaeologists are doing their stuff, and it’s open to the public tomorrow (Saturday 7th November), I think from 10-2 to take a look around.
