Cheadle is changing – have your say

by Lib Dem team on 17 October, 2014

Help shape Cheadle – come along to Cafe One, the Upper Rooms, Cheadle at 9.30am on Saturday 1st November 2014 to get involved and have your say.

Cheadle in changing. As budgets become tighter, the Lib Dems have launched a programme to give local people more say over how our area looks. Cheadle is piloting the approach with the rest of Stockport following on next year.

We want as many people as possible to get involved. Cheadle Village Partnership have already done a lot of the leg-work and the next step is to get practical.

There are two ways you can contribute.

First, we want to understand what people’s priorities are for Cheadle. With limited money to spend, how should it be split between parks, play areas, libraries, street cleaning, the village centre and other areas.

Second, we want to know where local groups would like to get involved. If a Friends of the Park group is interested in doing more, we can help that to happen and get better outcomes for everyone at the end of it.

So please come along, have your say and get involved.

I am delighted to see all the changes in Cheadle, but very upset how neglected my side of Cheadle (the poor side/the X council side).
I’ve put my house for sale, and all viewers were very pleased with the house but no one liked the area. I felt really insulted.
Driving along Oak Road is very grim and horrible, so by the time they arrive to John ave, they want nothing to do do with it. Few people did not even enter the house, just drove past and said no.
The footpath right next to my house is horrible and might as well be closed off as it is only used for trouble makers.
I am not sure what can be done there but very stressed about it.

Hi Taghrid – I hope you can come along to the meeting and have your say. It’s true that the Oak Road area is mostly social housing or former social housing, though Stockport Homes do a pretty good job on maintenance and repairs of their properties. We’ve already made some improvements to the roads (e.g. the end of Brookfield resurfaced along with the whole of Chestnut/Acorn/Ash and the £100 million road repair programme will see a lot more done over the next few years). You’ve also got some really good local schools, parks and a great village centre within walking distance. There’s always more that can be done and, hopefully, we can find ways to do it even at a time when money’s very tight at the council.

As Chairman of Cheadle Civic Society I have been involved in the renovation of Cheadle Green and Hall grounds for the past year. After collecting rubbish from the grass and pond yesterday I sat on the bench to enjoy the October sun.As I sat admiring the view I notice how many people from the Oak Road direction were passing the Green on the way to the shops, and realized just how important this area is to this side of Cheadle.Anyone coming to Cheadle from Wilmslow Road,or Gatley Road does not receive the same benefit of the time and money spent on the Green.
In the same thought, only a small percentage of our membership are from the Oak Road area.My ideal would be to receive more membership requests from here, and these like minded residents, together with help from Cheadle Civic Society and others, seek out and develop projects to enhance where they live.
While you think on this, please keep the Green free of rubbish and encourage others to do so.This is your space-do not let others spoil it.

I think a few people when referring to Cheadle mean the conservation area and forget that Cheadle is much larger than the old workers terraces and the high street. And quite often the less affluent East Side is overlooked. But more importantly will there be a meeting held when people who work Saturdays can attend or maybe a consultation on the web?

  3. Ian says:

I would totally agree with Phillips and Garys comments here. My view is that Cheadle belongs to all residents and this is an opportunity to empower any resident to change, alter or comment on matters which affect us all.

I also totally agree with Gary about holding a meeting also for those who work on Saturdays which must include those business owners in the village who have spent a lot of time and effort and importantly their money into developing Cheadle into a thriving shopping , eating, experience many other areas are envious of.

  4. Robert Taggart says:

Never mind Cheadle – how about smartening up Gatley ? – like sending the Tatton to the great film reel in the sky !

  5. keith bradbury says:

overall I think Cheadle is pretty vibrant and well maintained. Gatley on the other hand is rapidly deteriorating – it would be better to redevelop the Tatton site foe flats and for ex shops to relocate into existing shops in the village- this would create more residents and hopefully reduce the number of takeaways

    • Bruce Thwaite says:

The reason the Tatton site is such an eyesore is because the Libdems opposed the the redevelopment of it into a supermarket. Blame them because they opposed it to man.

      • John Hartley says:

Bruce is partially correct. The Lib Dems did oppose the Dickens proposal to develop the site. But then, so did the Tories and Labour.

I went to the planning appeal at the town hall – one of very few Gatley residents to do so – and listened to the then Tory councillor bleating on about all manner of objections – none of which were accepted by the planning inspector. His sole reason for not allowing the appeal was on a very technical point that there was slightly insufficient “amenity space” for the elderly persons accommodation.

To my mind, all three political parties were culpable in what, to me, seemed like a pandering to a small number of Gatley NIMBYs who lived in the very immediate area of the Tatton, without considering the benefits there would have been for the wider number of local people. .

  6. Carolyn Minkes says:

Yes I agree about Gatley. And as well as what others have said the pavements locally behind the Tatton are in very bad repair. Dangerous in bad weather and people walk in the road which is dangerous if you arena, pedestrian and difficult if you are a driver.
