by Lib Dem team on 4 November, 2014

Exciting events, festive markets, free parking and late night shopping are just some of the great things on offer in Stockport this Christmas.

Celebrations kick off with Merseyway Shopping Centre’s Christmas light switch-on event on Wednesday 12th November. The Council will be providing FREE parking from 2.00pm in its pay and display car parks and bays in the town centre.

Shoppers can find everything they need for the festive season with a wide variety of high street shops and small independents, both in the town centre and in the district and local centres. Town centre shoppers can hop aboard the free Metroshuttle bus which runs every 12 minutes.

Many shops in the town centre will be opening late every Wednesday until 10th December, then every evening from Monday 15th to Tuesday 23rd December (excluding Sunday 21st December).

The Council is offering FREE parking in Council-owned pay and display car parks and bays in the town centre all day on Sundays 30th November, 7th, 14th and 21st December. Free parking on Saturday 6th December in all Council-owned car parks and bays across the borough. Free parking is also available from 2pm every day from Monday 15th to Tuesday 23rd December.

Visitors to Bramhall, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Edgeley (except Armoury Street), Hazel Grove, Marple, Reddish and Romiley can also park for FREE in Council-owned car parks on Sunday 30th November and 7th, 14th, and 21st December.

Festive events are being held across the borough including in Reddish, Heaton Moor, Bramhall, Marple and Cheadle.

Festive and specialist markets will be on offer in the town centre and some district centres with great ideas for gifts, festive food and decorations.

Councillor Patrick McAuley, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “I’m really looking forward to what Stockport has in store for us this Christmas, with the free parking offer on Sundays and Mondays for Council owned car parks in the lead up to the big day. I went to the Halloween Foodie Friday in the Market Place with the kids and the atmosphere was outstanding.

“Look out for what’s going on in Stockport. Marple, Cheadle, Romiley, The Heatons, Reddish and all our districts centres are going to be buzzing. This has all the ingredients for a fun-filled Christmas. Let us know how you and your visitors enjoy it.”
