Covered bike store proposed for Gatley Station

by Lib Dem team on 21 November, 2014

We’ve reported recently on a number of improvements around Gatley station funded by the Government’s Cycle City funding, including wider pavements and the sorting out of the flooding problem at the junction of Oakwood Avenue and Gatley Road.

One thing we wanted to see was decent cycle parking at Gatley station, but as the land is owned by Network Rail it wasn’t in the gift of the Council to do it.

We’ve now been told that there is agreement between the Council, Network Rail and TfGM to install a covered cycle parking facility at Gatley Station, hopefully next Spring.

We’re also pressing for Network Rail to convert the overgrown land behind the electricity substation into additional car parking – that’s beyond the scope of the current scheme but we firmly believe it would be a big help for the overall parking situation.

Cycling in Gatley would be a lot easier if the residents of Northenden/Altrincham Road didn’t use the cycle lane as their own personal car-park.

We certainly need more car spaces at the Station. The nearby residential roads are taking the strain.

  3. Iain Roberts says:

I agree Anne – and of course if we can get more people cycling to the station that will reduce the number of cars too.

Wish they’d also spend at bit on sprucing up the bridge – it’s the first thing you see on your way into Gatley & it gives a terrible first impression.
The bridge in Cheadle near the Bupa Hospital is beautiful – ours is a disgrace by comparison!

Why are the times an hour in front on the comments??

I wonder if Network Rail/Northern might be persuaded to put some seats under the shelter on the Southbound platform of Heald Green station? The existing seats are out in the rain! Some side baffles would be useful too as its a very uncomfortable place to be when waiting for a train to the Airport or Crewe on a wet and windy day.
