Sign Mark Hunter’s petition to get Metrolink to Cheadle and Gatley

by Lib Dem team on 26 January, 2015

Last week we had the good news that pressure and campaigning from Mark Hunter and the Lib Dem team had resulted in a landmark Rail Strategy report for Stockport, recommending a new Metrolink line including stops at Cheadle and Gatley – 61 years after Cheadle’s last railway station closed under the Beeching axe.

It’s a big step forward – the strategy is agreed between Stockport Council and TfGM. But there’s a long way to go. There are always far more transport projects around the country than there is money to pay for them, so if we want to push ours to the top of the list we need to show not only that it stacks up economically but also that it has strong local support.

Mark and the team were out in Cheadle last weekend collecting signatures in support of the proposal and we’d like you to add your name. Please sign and pass it onto other people you know locally – the more signatures we can get, the better our chances.

Sign the petition here.

I have signed this but how about working towards coordination and integration between the buses and existing train and tram systems now?

Many of us don’t have easy access to either now and this could just another aspect to the perpetuation of Tfgm’s apparent view that transport somehow stops a the Manchester borough border, eg the many empty buses turning round at Parr’s Wood while we often end up with one bus an hour to and from the City.

I couldn’t agree more. If one wants a bus going to Parrswood, they seem to be available every few minutes,(albeit almost empty during the day) because the route is quite profitable. Any where beyond there hardly seems to exist!

I agree about the buses. For years everywhere outside London has had deregulated buses. That means the bus routes go where the companies can make a profit. It’s not TfGM (plenty of bus routes come in and through Stockport) but a lack of control over the network.

For the first time, we have an opportunity to change that in the coming years. Manchester’s Devolution deal includes bus regulation and that will give us more power to design the bus network we need for the benefit of Greater Manchester.

    Iain,

My vote is to simply replace the platforms at the Cheadle and Gatley/Northenden stations along with some others on the Stockport to Altrincham line. This should not cost a fortune.

I feel that instead of supporting the hugely unpopular and phenominally expensive HS2 proposal we should be looking at reversing some of the Beeching cuts.

To ease any congestion on the WCML, I would strongly support the re-introduction of a competing East Midlands service from Manchester/Stockport to St Pancras where interchange to Thameslink and Southern destinations is now available. Don’t forget that the present congestion on the WCML was due to the closure of the St Pancras and Marylebone services in the first place.
