Lane closures on Kingsway for maintenance over half term

by Lib Dem team on 27 January, 2015

Substantial maintenance and repair work on the retaining walls on Kingsway at the Cheadle Royal junction will be done next month. The work starts on February 14th and is estimated to take ten days. The crews will work every day, including weekends, and the aim is to do as much as possible over half term. In addition, work will only take place from 9.30am to 3.30pm to minimise the impact. If the weather is especially bad, works may have to be extended by up to a week.

Kingsway Interchange

A lane on Kingsway will be closed in each direction during the works.

The proposed works incorporate both the East and the West Retaining Walls of the Kingsway Interchange, resolving the defects identified by recent Structural Inspections.

These works include:

  • Clear The Interchange Drainage System: includes the inspection galleries, back of wall drainage, retaining wall weepholes and the carriageway drainage for the surrounding interchange.
  • Undertake a comprehensive de-vegetation of the retaining walls and parapet handrails.
  • Rake out and repoint any defective mortar to the retaining wall brickwork (mainly to the west retaining wall).
  • Apply a protective coating to the bottom section of brickwork on the west retaining wall (full length).
  • Replace any damaged mesh infill panels along the entire interchange structure.

Following on from this a series of de-vegetation works are due to take place on and within surrounding subways which provide a safe access for pedestrians in and around the Kingsway interchange.

These works have been programmed to be undertaken on the 2nd to the 5th of February 2015, but may be subject to change.

Can we be assured that outside the hours of work that all carriage way lanes will be open, and not as on Manchester Road which had restrictions 24 hours a day 7 days a week with very little work taking place.

Hi Roy – yes, that’s the case. It’s significantly more expensive to do it that way (as you have to pay the contractor to set up every morning and pack away every afternoon, which can increase the cost by as much as 25%) so there’s always a balance to be struck, but in the case of Kingsway the volume of traffic means that it will be done that way.
