The Council has received a planning application to convert Bruntwood Hall and Bruntwood Park into a 22 room boutique hotel.

Change of use and refurbishment of Bruntwood Hall from office to a 22 room luxury hotel, with associated bars and restaurant areas with external terrace and spa at ground floor. An additional courtyard extension to create additional circulation space is also proposed.

You can take a look at the plans here, and – if you want – submit your comments to the council.

what restrictions will this put on users of the park.?
Will they have their own car parking?
What loss of park grounds will there be?
Will the park cafe still be there?

    • Sarah Green says:

The car park in Bruntwood park is heavily used every morning and afternoon by parents doing the school run at a local school. They park in the park and walk to the school to reduce traffic and congestion around the school which is much safer for the children.

  2. What great news this is it will be wonderful to see new life breathed into the property at least Cheadle will retain some of it’s heritage

I am very concerned about the traffic analysis taken in November and do not think they have researched enough traffic in the summer months. Many times in the summer at the weekend there are no spaces left and add an extra potential 50 cars (for events) it will be the public that miss out.
Main point is that they propose to close the main gates at 6:00 every evening. It currently closes at dusk and in the summer months we are often at the park a lot later with many other people. It is not fair to the local residents to make everyone drive back the other route in as it is definitely not the safest. With the pitch and putt and the BMx track there would be too much traffic for that route only.
I think the hotel will be good but will there be a restriction on us playing at the back or side of the hall as this is a hugely popular area.
Who can answer these questions ???

    • Douglas McGeorge says:

      Dear Louise
As the person wanting to convert this lovely building, I can assure you that access to the park will not be restricted.
I don’t know where the information came from but it is in our interests for the park to be fully used.
We have proposed that the gates be electrified and controlled from the hotel, to allow access for guests after dark.
Our need for parking is when the park is quiet and so it will function as now, with the added amenity of a hotel and day spa.
      Douglas

Can you confirm that you will not be closing the gates at 6:00pm and if so can these be changed in the planning information. The park is still busy at that time in the summer months and access via the front gate is important.
Thank you for commenting on this forum and I hope your hotel is a success. Also, will the bar be open to the public or is it just guests as it would be lovely to have a drink there in the evening. Thanks , Sarah

        • Douglas McGeorge says:

          Hi Sarah
I am not sure where the 6.00pm comes from, but the park will be open as normal and will be open to residents 24/7.
The hotel will be open to the public, indeed we welcome you using our facilities!
          Kind regards
          Douglas

          • Sarah says:

The 6:00pm comes from your planning application documentation which clearly states that you will close the front gate at 6:00pm. If this is not going to happen then why is it in the documents? I think this will be a fantastic development but strongly believe that the front gates stay on until dusk as has always been the case. Traffic on schools hill is dangerous enough as it is without having to wait to call the hotel to open the gate. Thank you for your response but I think more clarification is needed. Thanks

          • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Sarah – I’ve not had the chance to read the planning application in detail – can you let me know where the statement about the gate is.

            Thanks.

          • paul kelly says:

the 6pm gate closing comes from the traffic analysis document which is only a reccomendation, if read it assumes that dusk is 6pm, and as we all know as park users the gates are closed at dusk.

As a member of the archery club situated in the park could I ask you to confirm that we will still have 24/7 access to both the indoor shooting range and the archery fireld, thank you

I’m pleased to hear of the plans for Bruntwood Hall and think it’s a great idea. However the MAJOR concern here is parking. Even at the present time there is not enough parking spaces for the visitors to the Park. On good weather days it becomes gridlock in the car park and then cars try and park down the residential roads, causing dangerous situations and havoc for local residents. What plans are in place for extra parking and how many extra car parking spaces are going to be made available. The hotel will not only have its residents and staff parking facilities to look after but also ‘visitors’ to the hotel. This really needs looking at urgently as there is a parking crisis at the moment and this is before bringing in extra vehicles for the hotel.
I know Iain has been very supportive of this and is trying to get increased parking but plans need to be in place as apart from creating dangerous situations, I’m sure hotel guests will be far from happy if they can’t park.

      • angie says:

Douglas, with respect I don’t think you are aware of the horrendous parking problem that occurs at Bruntwood Park. The traffic report is obviously prepared by people who have no knowledge of the extremely dangerous situations that occur on the surrounding roads. You only need to ask the Highways Dept. who are more than aware of the huge problem. The park keeps gaining more attractions, which in turn brings in more people with nowhere to park. We have no objection to the hotel as long as a) the Park finds enough parking to satisfy the ‘Park Visitors’ which is certainly doesn’t at the moment and b) the hotel provides enough parking spaces for its staff and visitors. You are going to need a huge amount of parking to make this a safe proposition. We have photos of how cars double park leaving no space for anyone to walk on pavements, parents with children having to walk in the middle of the road as they make their way to the Park. Disabled people in wheelchairs not being able to use the pavements for the same reason – I could go on. Would be happy to discuss with you.

Great idea, traffic flow and parking obviously – no need to add to that debate but i am concerned with the width of the School Hill Entrance/Exit. This needs to be widened and perhaps parking available over the small stream – this could help alleviate the parking issues for Ladybarn School during daytime / term time hours… I have wrote in about this suggestion previously. Iian could you contact me with regards to this suggestion please…. there is just too much traffic when parents drop/pick their children from the school…

  5. Babs says:

No – Cheadle does not need this in Bruntwood Park.Parking is terrible at the best of times and overspills in to adjacent roads much to the annoyance of many local residents.Parking by the Together Trust on both sides of schools hill is already a nightmare and we do not need this type of development within the grounds of a public park.
Terrible idea – have lodged objection with the council and many around here I know will follow suit.

  6. Just walk says:

WHY DO PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT PARKING ALL THE TIME AND THEN CANT BE BOTHERED TO WALK INSTEAD , SAYS IT ALL, SHORT SIGHTED AIR HEADS WHO GO EVERYWHERE IN A CAR, IF YOU CANT WALK A MILE OR TWO, THEN LIFES NOT WORTH LIVING IS IT ? .AND IT WILL STOP YOU ALL BECOMING FAT ASWELL. LEARN TO WALK AND SAVE YOUR HEALTH INSTEAD, I WAS TAKEN HOME FROM JUNIOR SCHOOL BY CAR ABOUT 12 TIMES IN 5 YEARS BY MY PARENTS, OTHER THAN THAT WE WALKED, ME MUMS AND DADS, WE WALKED TO THE PARKS IN THE AREA ,WE WALKED TO THE SHOPS IN THE AREA AND AFTER I GOT A BIKE, AND AFTER THAT, WELL IT’S JUST NORMAL, JUST GET REAL ! WHETHER ITS SCHOOL OR RECREATION JUST GET ON YOUR BIKE OR WALK AND STOP BEING LAZY, DRIVING AROUND AND FIDLING AROUND WITH YOUR IPHONES, GET A LIFE AND GIVE YOUR CHILDREN ONE ASWELL. IT’S VERY ENTERTAINING WATCHING WOBBLY WOMEN WITH FAT REARS AN MUFFINS TOPS, IT MAKES ME HOWL WITH LAUGHTER.

    • pk says:

Unfortunately not all of us can walk that distance, at bruntwood we have many disabled members who rely on cars and their wheelchairs to get them to the archery club, what makes me howl with laughter is illiterates that write everything in capitals………………….

      • JUST WALK says:

I WOULD NOT IN ANY WAY OFFEND PEOPLE WITH WALKING DIFFICULTIES, I MYSELF HAVE SUFFERED FOR 20 YRS WITH MY MOBILITY BUT I DO STILL MAKE THE EFFORT, AS FOR CAPITALS… I LOVE EM, PARIS IS GREAT. OBVIOUSLY IF YOU ARE CARRYING SPORTS EQUIPMENT BACK AND FORTH , FINE .
THE REASON FOR CAPITALS IS MY EYESIGHT IS LIMITED.

I WAS AIMING MOSTLY AT THE FIT AND ABLE PEOPLE WHO FIDDLE ABOUT WITH THEIR PHONES ALL THE TIME AND SPEND THE REST OF THEIR LIVES IN CARS.

      • John Simpson says:

pk – What makes me howl with laughter *are* illiterates who correct others and make huge mistakes themselves.

  7. paul kelly says:

traffic reccomendations are in place if people care to fully read the documentation, the hotel (or any full use of the hall) is a good idea, would people rather the hall fall into ruin? like so many buildings of this type, or maybe they would like to come up with the costs of leaving it empty but mainaining it? or maybe they would rather have it knocked down and extra parking spaces put in its place………………………..

    • Sarah says:

Paul – I think if you looked at the majority of the comments you would see that people have read the documentation and people do see the positives of the hotel but clearly there are some areas of concern that have a right to be raised. A large number of people use the park on a daily basis and want the same level of enjoyment from it and want to ensure that certain areas such as the traffic on schools hill looked at in detail. A traffic report taken during the winter is an area of concern and in people commenting about this and the parking should not be seen as people saying want the hall flattened.
Just walk – there is no point responding to such a stupid post and I would not lower myself to do so.

  8. George says:

Great news that the Hall will be a Hotel.. it needed some TLC.. the property as been empty for over 5 years .and needed something like this to save it falling in to a roofless memento…
