Poor pavement outside Gatley Green Co-op is privately owned

by Lib Dem team on 19 May, 2015

We’ve been chasing up the poor state of the pavement outside the Gatley Green Co-op, A&I, Coffee Fix and other units – cracked paving slabs look to us to be a hazard and someone could injure themselves.

If it was owned by the Council it would be easy to sort, but unfortunately, that section of pavement is privately owned – probably by the person or company who owns the building. They could be liable if someone were to injure themselves because of the poor state of the pavement there.

The purple area is maintained by the Council - the pavement in front of the Co-op is not.

We will try to track down the owner and make the case: private or public, the stretch is part of the village centre, is well used and should be properly maintained.

I have had several fractures over the last year and uneven ground has contributed to one of them. Although it was not uneven pavement i am afraid that uneven pavement is a hazard that could cause another accident. It is not always easy to remember to avoid the pavement if you are shopping in this part of Gatley which I like to do. Please continue in your efforts to help. I can’t be the only one who is worried about this.

Agree that it needs sorting, I did assume that it’s private. But then again, the recently re-paved areas in Gatley are already showing signs of poor workmanship. Walk along past Sopranos and the Photis so see the number of lifting or uneven slabs. Perhaps they should be looked at as they are council responsibility.

Absolutely John – if anyone lets us know of any specific issues (or notifies the council directly) they should be sorted. We’ll check the paving outside Sopranos and Photis.

If you come out of Church Rd onto Styal Rd on foot & use the crossing to get to the other side, the pavements around there are particularly hazardous & have been for years but I can’t see them ever being repaired as it wouldn’t affect enough people. When they resurfaced Styal Rd, the difference (visually) compared to what was there before was amazing, they did a cracking job – I just really wish they’d do the same with the pavement.

Hi Jane – we’ll take a look. If there’s a trip hazard, we should be able to sort it. If it’s just poor condition but without a trip hazard, I hope it will be picked up as part of our £100 million investment to repair all the bad roads and pavements.

Also, any chance of getting drains, gullies etc. flushed though? Still lots of flooded areas of road at the kerb sides and on some pavements……
