by Lib Dem team on 24 July, 2015

gmp logoThe Lib Dem team have organised a public meeting with the Police at 7.30pm on Monday 27th July. The Venue is Cheadle Mosque, 377 Wilmslow Rd, Heald Green, Cheadle SK8 3NP. Inspector Neil Cook from Stockport West Police will be attending, as will local councillors.

We’ve set up the meeting to discuss car crime, but no doubt people will have other issues to raise too!

All welcome, and we’ll do a write-up of the meeting for those who can’t make it.

I would like to know why the council don’t put deep remove able poles at access points to fields and football areas to prevent travellers from getting on a tree trunk was left at an access point to the field on Brookfield road that was just rolled out of the way useless. And how can they get away with cutting through a chain and camping on the ground next to Cheadle Town and the primary school ! They are allreadY knocking on doors wanting to re point Ridge tiles intimidating old folk. If I parked my caravan on the field I would be taken to court and fined Nothing happens to travellers and they leave a disgusting mess as most of them don’t have toilets in their vans the law needs changing come on Libs do something PLEASE.

    Hi Philip,

The problem the council has is that there are literally hundreds of possible fields for travellers to move into and protecting all of them would take a huge amount of money. Then there’s the problem that we can’t possibly protect the fields well enough to stop anyone breaking in, unless we turn them all into prison camps that local residents won’t be able to easily use.

Where there’s a particular problem, the council does take action.

Exactly the same laws apply to you and me as to travellers – they have been taken to court and will be moved on (hopefully in the next few days when the legal order comes through).

We’re doing all we can to resolve the situation, but it does take time and the council has to act within the law.

Thanks for your reply I appreciate the problems but they do seem to use the current laws to their advantage. They should be charged for cleaning up the mess in the form of a spot fine they only have cash or impound some vans till they pay.

Philip – you’re absolutely right, travellers know the law inside-out and do use it their advantage.
