Stockport Council completes purchase of Edgeley Park

by Lib Dem team on 31 July, 2015

Stockport Council has completed its purchase of Edgeley Park. Contracts have been signed and all due diligence requirements for the purchase have been finalised.
The Council has purchased Edgeley Stadium, the home of Stockport County Football Club for the benefit of the Club and the people of Stockport. We will now be working with the Football Club to review their lease of the Stadium.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Deputy Leader of Stockport Council, said: “This is a genuinely commercial arrangement which will enable a landlord-tenant relationship to be set-up between the Council and Stockport County Football Club. This purchase is on a cost neutral basis and will therefore not cost Stockport Council Tax payers a penny.
“The Council, will not, at any stage, be providing financial support to the football club. We have bought the ground in order to provide stability for the team to remain in Stockport. We want to see the club progress both on and off the field and hope that this will help to secure its longer term future.”
County’s senior advisor to the Board of Directors, Steve Bellis commented “This is a momentous day for everyone involved with Stockport County Football Club. The security and stability that this gives the Club just ahead of the start of a new season cannot be underestimated. Edgeley Park is a great asset that will earn the Council and therefore the people of Stockport a commercial return. We look forward to continuing to put this wonderful town on the map.”
The Council’s legal services department acted on the purchase and Glaisyers Solicitors (Manchester) acted for the seller, Cheshire Sport Promotions.
