Over the next five years, the ambitious programme of projects will include: Redrock Stockport, a new cinema, cafes and restaurants; Stockport Exchange, a new office quarter by the station; Stockport Interchange, creating a new bus station; new homes at Covent Garden Village, rejuvenation of the Market Place and Underbanks; and major improvements to the ways people get into and around the town centre, with estimated investment by the Council and partners of £900 million.

The Council is working with the Groundwork Trust, an environmental regeneration charity, to create a “pop up park” in the town centre at Mersey Square, on Friday 28th August. The park is designed to bring some greenery and fun to the town centre while construction works are underway, and to display information about the projects and plans. The feature will stay until the autumn when work starts on festive decorations.

Councillor Iain Roberts, Deputy Leader of Stockport Council, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Groundwork Trust to help bring to life the Stockport vision in the town centre and keep people updated and informed along the way. Creating the “pop up park” will help to illustrate our commitment to Invest in Growth and create a lovely green area for sitting and relaxing over the bank holiday weekend and throughout autumn. We aim to keep the park flourishing until we start to prepare the town centre for the festive season. I do hope people will come along and enjoy the greenery and take the opportunity to find out more about the exciting projects and developments underway.”
