Tatton Cinema site – full plans now on view

by Lib Dem team on 11 September, 2015

The full plans for the proposed development on the Tatton Cinema site in Gatley have now been put online on the council’s website.

tatton front

The planning application 58809 can be seen here and you can click-through to see all the documents here.

Keith and the Lib Dem team have long worked to get the site developed. This proposal is for 35 flats, a small supermarket at the front and retaining the art-deco frontage.

To have a planning application is a big step forward. We want to know what you think about the application. We have to bear in mind, though, that we can only say “yes” or “no” to a planning application – not change it – and the outcome of saying “no” might well be that the site stays as it is now for several more years.

Even if the planning application is approved, that’s no guarantee that something will be built, so the Lib Dems are also pressing the council to continue with the Compulsory Purchase Order.

“It’s a belt-and-braces approach,” Keith said. “There are no guarantees, but we are doing everything we can to make sure the Tatton site is developed properly.”

Will be a huge improvement. Looks great.
Don’t know why the ‘A’ for Apollo has to stay on the front
though. I seem to remember the Apollo group purchasing the Tatton around 20 years ago and they put their logo on the front – so that’s not very art deco! Good advert for Apollo.
Unless of course my memory fails me.

Really support this planning application but is there anyway that the council could say that if the application is approved then work has to be started and taken forward within a certain quick time frame proviso.

  3. Malcolm Joels says:

High time this was sorted. Looks fine so let’s get it approved, and, above all, built.

  4. Ruth says:

Why does the facade have to stay?
‘Every’ town had one these art deco cinema frontages…so
hardly of any great historical significance which needs them to be listed. What is the process for de-listing and then knocking the whole building down for redevelopment?

    • John says:

I couldn’t agree with Ruth more. Personally I’m not a fan of “Art Deco” but this in any case is not a shining example of it. I think it would be better for all if we were to be rid of it and instead to install some new and imaginative landmark to highlight the centre of our village

No problem with what is being proposed. However concerned that the plan does not appear to take into account the unadopted pathway between Gatley Road and Cambridge Road. Because no one is responsible for this pathway it is very overgrown and provides ample hiding places for any would-be perpetrators to hide in the bushes and jump out on someone to commit an offence. It is also a quick getaway route from any crime committed behind the Tatton Cinema site because it is dark, overgrown and provides plenty of shelter.
There does not appear to be any mention of this in the crime report. Maybe I have missed mention of this in all the planning paperwork?

  6. Jane says:

Do we know which supermarket it will be? A small M&S food would be lovely.

  7. Paula Isherwood says:

I also agree that it is time the art deco sign was removed. (Always thought it was a poor example of a rather ugly piece of architecture)

I seem to remember that the purchaser was supposed to take over the road in front of the cinema and the path at the side and look after the maintenance. Is this no longer the case?

    • Rob says:

I wouldn’t expect them to pay any attention to that Paula, for years I have been trying to get them to sort out the rear access as I own 2 Tatton buildings next door and they have blocked us in, causing a severe fire hazard. Not to mention the loose bricks and glass hanging overhead. Will be going to the public newspapers to bring the issue to light as it’s been a year since I had a site visit from Dickens and nothing has been done. Even the new plans seem to ignore this and state that I will be fenced in, yet I am not the only property owner there who would be affected by this. Dickens have made no attempt to contact the businesses in the planning process and have adopted an “ignore it and it will go away” stance

Get on with the build I say. The site has been an eyesore for years and this application looks good to me. Get rid of the Apollo sign – agree with that. No need to put any further signage on the front – just make it look tidy. Start a local competition to ‘name’ the new building, perhaps after a respected Gatley resident (‘Chandley House’) would be good. A small supermarket – WHY ??? is this just for the new residents – come on, cross the road and open your eyes people – we already have enought outlets in the village. And don’t lets have yet another Take-Out either.

Where is the bus stop in all this?

  10. Tony Kaye says:

I don’t see any real attraction in keeping the frontage. I don’t think it is that significant any more. But other than that I am keen to see the site development move on. It will hopefully really improve the ‘feel’ of the village as you drive through. I am concerned about yet another supermarket. As we have 2 Co-ops, plus Tesco Express, do we really need another ‘chain store’ supermarket. Whilst it would be lovely to have an M&S food store, I would prefer that to be on Church Road instead of one of the Co-ops. The problem relates to the volume of traffic on Gatley Road, which really cannot take any more. I trust that the Kingsway Junction improvements will be considered at the same time, to improve traffic flow, and I hope the council is doing traffic modelling during any consideration of development of the site. I hope the area will be landscaped too.

  11. MK says:

I don’t get what people would want instead of a supermarket, if you could please make a suggestion to what business you’d like to see occupying this premises then please say. And remember it has to be able to actually turn a profit in this location. A different brand supermarket like a M&S food, little Waitrose or a Booths I think beneficial as there does certainly seem to be a demand for a more up-market supermarket to appease the wannabe posh-os and further gentrify Gatley. NOTE I’m not saying this is a bad thing because it’ll help further raise my house price.

Also keep the sign! It’s iconic and the money developers spend on a new design will only be wasted. After all other people will only complain about the new design as art is subjective and you can’t design something everyone will like. Plus changing the frontage will only further slow down the planning process and profitability of the development. Those who don’t like it, lump it! The sign been here longer than you have!

  12. Mike Savage says:

What a difference six years can make.

Although the submitted plans aren’t radically different from what was proposed back in 2009, you can’t fail to have noticed the difference in the public’s reaction to them.

Not this time the rancorous public meetings, the fury about another supermarket, and the 350+ objections to the scheme. This time there’s a generally warm reception to the plans and optimistic chatter about what supermarket it might be. At the time of writing just five responses have been received by the council – four of them being positive.

Well done Dickens, for a textbook demonstration of how best to play the waiting game.

People, the end could be in sight!

  13. H.T.Mclean says:

Retail units with flats/offices above are OK for the existing building. What we need is a car park behind, not more houses.
