The Lib Dem team would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign to save Stockport Courthouse, which we’ve found out today has been successful.

The case our local magistrates put, along with the strong support from residents across Stockport borough, has forced the Government to change its mind and save the courthouse.

Had it closed, Police would have wasted time ferrying defendants to Manchester, families would have had to make long and difficult journeys for family courts and we would have lost the facilities we need in our borough.

Thank you to everyone who signed Keith’s petition last autumn – we have won the day!

However, we should recognise that the Government are still closing one in five courts and tribunals across the country, and other areas have been less successful than us in overturning the decision.
