Overnight resurfacing of part of Manchester Road

by Lib Dem team on 29 April, 2016

The Lib Dem’s nine-year, £100m programme to repair all the bad roads and pavements across Stockport is working its way around the borough.

As part of the programme, Stockport Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing on Manchester Road from Newlands Road to Mill Lane. This work will be carried out by the council’s Alliance Partner Tarmac Ltd during night shift arrangements.

The work is scheduled to commence on Thursday evening 19th May 2016 and may take up to 2 weeks to complete, weather permitting and will carried out on week nights only between the hours of 19:30 and 05:30hrs with the use of a ‘One Way’ system on Manchester Road. During the times stated above traffic will be prohibited from travelling in a southerly direction (towards Cheadle Village) from the junction with Mill Lane. Vehicles will be diverted via; Kingsway, Gatley Road and High Street.

Access to properties in the working zone will be maintained wherever possible but may be restricted for certain periods as the work progresses.

Information boards will be erected on site advising road users of the programmed work prior to the works commencing. Residents, businesses (including The Alexandra Hospital) will receive a letter explaining the scope of the work and timescales involved. The Council has also consulted with TfGM (buses) and notified Manchester City Council who will make any necessary arrangements to services that may be affected during the programmed works.

Fantastic does this mean that at last the temporary (been there for over 18months) Barriers on the Motorway bridge will finally be removed and the illconcieved cycle track will finally be finished and USED.
I await to see your response

    • Halifaix says:

      Roy,

The use of this cycle lane will not increase when the barriers are removed, as (as you state) it was ill conceived.

I cycle down Manchester Road daily, and when travelling towards Manchester, I do not use the cycle lane and from what I see few others do either.

I can’t express strongly enough (as a cyclist) how stupid this cycle lane is. It probably looks good on paper, and no doubt it ticks several boxes on some Government form, but from a users point if view, it has made Manchester Road more dangerous. If a cyclist is ever killed on this road, I hope the Councillors who approved it are held to account.

  2. Iain Roberts says:

Hi Roy – unfortunately not. Much as the local councillors, and the Council, wanted the bridge sorted a year ago, I understand that Highways England are still being obtructive. We’ll keep on at it, but it’s Highways England that are holding things up.

  3. Sue F says:

During this ‘9 year programme’, is Barcheston Road on the plan for a full resurface, which has never been carried out during the nearly 90 years or has been struggling to cope?

  4. Sue F says:

    #it

  5. Stuart Cox says:

Will the horrendous pot holes just in on newlands road be looked at when this work is carried out?

  6. Hilda Berryman says:

Not good enough Iain. Two years now we’ve been waiting from the council and Highways England to sort the bridge on Manchester Road. Excuses don’t wash. Why on earth planning was given in the first place without the buy-in of all concerned parties is unacceptable. No wonder cyclists don’t use the path.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Hilda – I agree: it’s not good enough and it’s not acceptable. We’re doing all we can to get Highways England to sort this out. (To answer your quetion, they originally *did* agree but then changed their minds).

      • Peter Franklin says:

As they realized what stupid idea it really was. Perhaps they`re waiting for you to realize the same, and restore the full functional width back to this road. Blame Highways England all you like, but I think the vast majority of us feel it was you who wasted a lot of tax-payers money on a white elephant.

  7. Margaret Cumminsf says:

Hoping that the pavements down Stockport road , Cheadle (a main thoroughfare for hundreds of people every day including many school children) will be included in the spend. I have a photo I can send you which shows what happens when ponds appear after just a little rain. Maybe when the nearby flat conversation has finished, someone will take charge.
One can but try to bring this up again, and live in hope?
