Borrow eBooks and audio books from Stockport Libraries

by Lib Dem team on 9 September, 2011

Stockport Libraries are offering a new service – you can borrow eBooks and audio books online (to read the eBooks, you need a reader that works with the eBook standard – that’s pretty much all of them except Kindle which is difficult).

The service officially launches on 19th September, but it seems you can get a sneak preview.

(It may be possible to convert from eBook to Kindle format for those of you who are more technically minded – let me know if you try it out).

Here’s the official announcement.

Stockport Council will be offering customers the chance to download e-books and audio-books from the library’s website.

The new service from Council libraries will be available from Monday 19th September.

Customers will be able to download their choice of books from the library website anywhere, anytime on a range of media devices.

The initial collection will grow each month as more titles are added from a range of popular, classics, bestselling, contemporary fiction and non-fiction books. There will be something for everyone.

Library users can have up to three titles for 14 days, at the end of the loan period the e-book or audio book will automatically expire. To use the service people will need to have a library ticket.

Titles are downloadable to most media devices and there are full instructions on the website to help with this.

Councillor John Smith, Executive Member for Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be launching our e-books collection at a time when the demand for this service is growing. This new service will appeal to many of the boroughs existing library users but will also attract new readers who want to access services remotely.”

The announcement says,’To use the service people will need to have a library ticket’. How will the service know I have a library card?

  2. Les Leckie says:

Now I see. Its the number on your library card you need to sign in.

I’ve got two questions about this service…

    1) if the books are virtual why can’t multiple people check-out the title simultaneously.

    2) Why are the titles not (as far as I can tell) Kindle compatible; surely this is the commonest eReader?

  4. ANTHONY Mcguire says:

Agree with the above. The kindle is the dominant ereader in the world. Appears we can rely on SMBC to make this process as difficult as possible.
