A cycle route from Cheadle and Gatley to Parrs Wood

by Lib Dem team on 30 March, 2012

We’ve long been keen to get an improved route for cyclists north from Cheadle & Gatley towards Parrs Wood and Manchester.

You can go via Northenden or the other side of Cheadle – on Manchester Road – but going along Kingsway means taking your life in your hands or – at best – cycling along pavements which, though normally empty, aren’t designed with cyclists in mind.

I’m pleased to say that we are now working on a scheme for safe and (reasonably) direct cycling along Kingsway. It won’t suit everyone – if every second counts on your commute then this route will take a little longer. But it should allow cyclists a safe route, avoiding having to cross Kingsway and avoiding cycling across busy slip roads (the big problem going north is the three slip roads to cross).

The plans are still at the early stages, but they’ll involve a combination of signed routes down quieter roads, improved crossings, using the new toucan crossing to be installed at the end of the slip road off the M60 and upgrading the pavement along the east side of Kingsway up to Parrs Wood.

That is good news. I dread that section of road every time!!!
I’m a bit confused though, are you just referring to the Northbound direction of travel? Or southbound too (i.e. from Parrswood to Cheadle)?

    Hi Amanda,

The route will need to work both ways.

I nno longer cycle but I am delighted that at last there is an acknowledgement that a safe route will be available as I abandoned Kingsway as a potential death trap. does this mean that pedestrians will be able to walk from Parrs Wood to Gatley safely?

  4. I completely 110% agree I am 74 and still love to cycle. This week I used kingsway from Cheadle to parswood and it was a nightmare. At the slip road junction I could not get into the right lane cars were doing well over 60 miles hour and would not let me get over to the right lane passing so close it was a death trap for cyclist something definitely needs to be done as a cyclist will be killed there. Thank you for bringing this attention to the right people. Regards Neville
