Stockport jobseekers can now get a 50% discount on train tickets to job interviews, after this month’s launch of the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Railcard.

Commenting Hazel Grove MP, Andrew Stunell, said –

“This is excellent news for those Stockport residents who would find it convenient to use trains to attend job interviews, or get to the jobcentre or to training sessions.”

The new card is a follow-up to an earlier scheme which was used for six and a half million rail journeys by jobseekers in the previous 10 years, saving users around £11million.

According to research by ATOC 36% of people said they would not have been able to attend interviews without the help of the card.

“There’s no doubt it is good value for money, and makes the stressful business of job-searching just a little easier. Many jobseekers miss out on it, so I’m urging people ask at the Job Centre if they need one” says Mr Stunell.

The railcard is available to eligible unemployed people who have been out of work for 13 weeks or more and who are using rail services for travel to and from the jobcentre, job interviews and/or training for up to three months at a time.

Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Cards are only available from Jobcentre Plus offices. Jobseekers should speak to their Jobcentre Plus personal advisor for more information.
