Stockport Town Centre 1930s-1960s

by Lib Dem team on 15 March, 2013

In the 1930s the good people of Stockport decided that building a road over the River Mersey was an excellent idea – it opened in 1940.  In 1964 the Merseyway Shopping Centre was constructed on top of that road.  At the time a cutting edge shopping centre, Merseyway is now showing its age.

This photo was taken around 1950 and shows Stockport Town Centre, with the wide Merseyway road running up the middle of the photo and some landmarks (old and new) marked.

This video by former Stockport councillor Peter Scott (he retired just a couple of years ago) shows Stockport in 1966.

And this video includes footage of the Merseyway Road (opened in 1940) and the Merseyway Shopping Centre from the 1960s.

I worked for Gerrards of Swinton on the Merseyway redevelopment project in 1966 as trainee site engineer and remember well the early construction phase.
It is interesting to see the video showing the tower cranes and also the completed works
