    Oneself fears Dementia…
Not for oneself, but, another family member.
The reason for their suffering of this debilitating disorder ? – the ‘blessed’ NHS !
Were it not for that ‘blessed’ institution – the person concerned would never have lived long enough to suffer Dementia.
Alas, medical interventions (plural note) by this exalted body means ever more people are being denied their ‘demise’ at the time of natures calling – only to all too often finish off worse than they started.
They, their family and their friends then have to suffer more – instead of being able to ‘move on’ in their own lives.

Not quite, Robert. Although you may be avoiding medical treatment in a bid to die young, that isn’t a path I’d recommend!

The evidence on why we’re living longer lives is pretty clear – it’s not down to the NHS so much as general advances in healthcare. That’s why the trend has been seen in almost every country around the world, regardless of the sort of healthcare system they have.

It’s also important to note that we’re staying healthier for longer – it’s not just our lifespans that are being extended but also our healthy and active lifespans.

You’re right about the nature of the diseases we suffer from changing, though: we all have to die sometime and of something so as the young killers like smallpox, polio and TB have been conquered (to such an extent that the suffering they caused is fading from our folk memory) diseases that tend to affect elderly people more like cancer are increasing.

There is a dementia support group called No Limts that meets every fortnight on a Friday lunchtime in Cafe One in Cheadle above Tesco. It’s a partnership between St Mary’s Church and Age UK. The next meeting will be on 8th November at 1.00pm.
