Cheadle Area Committee report back, 4th November 2014

by Lib Dem team on 4 November, 2014

A fairly short Cheadle Area Committee this evening – just over an hour.

The decisions we made were:

  • Money given towards repairing the minibus for Chelwood Foodbank Plus (I think £450)
  • £1000 given to Cheadle Village Partnership towards the £5,670 needed to fund the Cheadle Victorian Christmas Market Day
  • Planning application 56489 (Retetion of woodland/agricultural land for dog care day facility (Muttley Crew Dogs Ltd) at 90 Manchester Road passed onto the Planning & Highways committee (because it’s in the greenbelt) with a recommendation to grant.
  • Double yellow lines at the junction of Cranston Grove and Park Road approved
  • Amendment to “School Keep Clear” lines outside Bolshaw School, Cross Lane, Heald Green to make them part time only – this to allow coaches to stop outside the school and pick up pupils.
  • 30 minute limited parking bay outside Gatley Convenience Store, Pendlebury Road and double yellow lines on the inside of the bend at the junction of Pendlebury and Old Hall Road approved. This will now be advertised and come back to Area Committee to consider any objections.
  • We agreed to the removal of a disabled parking bay outside 7 Bulkeley Road, Cheadle as the resident who needed it has passed away.
  • We approved the plans for the Cheadle Victorian Christmas Market day, 6th December 10am-8pm but asked that the grass area on Cheadle Green be fenced off with tape to stop the grass being destroyed by people walking on it.

Ref: Cheadle Green and the Christmas Market… Having seen what a fantastic job they have done I’m extremely disappointed that the commitee have agreed to have the market back after Cheadle Civic Society have paid thousands of pounds creating a beautiful green space in the centre of our village. While I agree it’s a great thing for Cheadle and the local community … I’m very disappointed that the committee have decided that the only bit they value saving is the actual front green. Can’t the stall holders be made to cover the grass in front and around their stalls so all the grass has a chance to look as beautiful as it does now? No one will be able to see the stalls when it gets dark as the lights have still not been turned on.

    • Iain Roberts says:

The application for the market is from Cheadle Civic Society, who would also be responsible for restoring the green, but as I mentioned above the councillors felt that the whole area of the green is important which is why we’ve asked for the grassed areas to be fenced off teh protect it.

It looks Lovely now a pleasure driving through Cheadle. Perhaps the stalls can be around the church like last year and maybe down the side street ir on the pavements.

      • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Sue, in addition to stalls at Cheadle Green the Christmas market will have stalls at the Church and the White Hart, plus the traders will be getting involved along the High Street and the Methodist Church too.

For What it is worth my view is that the Christmas Market really worked around the Church and White Lion area and had a real old village feel about it ,the area around the new village green was remote from this hub and by centralising the whole event to the Church end it will remove the fears of those who are concerned about damage to the good work that has been carried out. On the other hand the Cheadle Green we should remember it is public Land for the use by the public and we should not get too precious about it. The next thing will be keep off the grass signs.

  3. Phillip Gould-Bourn says:

As Chairman/Treasurer of CCS I have seen the Green Project through the last year on a daily basis, and can make these comments. No one is more concerned than I about the condition of the Green.CCS are in the process of signing a lease for the maintenance, and all maintenance this year has been arranged and paid for by CCS.The Green is public, but we would like not to have it affected by events.People do think all the land is the Green, but the land behind the large seat to Queens Gardens is the grounds of the old Cheadle Hall.We have had many discussions regarding the Christmas Market, and the majority would like to see it again. To that end, we have decided that it will run, one stall deep along the central path through the grounds, on covered grass. The rest of the grass will be fenced off to allow the path to be the only way through to resemble a street. There will be no hot food services, or any type of stall that will cause damage. The electricity meter is now fitted and the new lamps will soon be lit .For the first time in years there will be light! CCS purchased and fitted these, and will pay the running costs. We are determined that the Market will run smoothly, the grass will not be affected, and another Christmas Market will be a great success.
I would point out that all that you have seen happen on the area of the Green has been made possible only by the many hours given by the CCS Committee and volunteers-thank you to all.

  4. Simon Greaves says:

    Why does it cost £6,000?

  5. Simon Greaves says:

Yes Iain, what does £6,000 pay for? I can understand the odd licence and insurance plan, but £6,000?! Surely there’s a way to have this lowered, or find a commercial sponsor to cover these costs?

  6. Iain Roberts says:

Simon – if you’re querying the costs for the Victorian market, you’d do better to ask the Cheadle Civic Society about the details as it’s their project. They did give a breakdown of costs in their funding application which included:

Hire of gazebos, assembly, dismantle and festoon lighting for churchyard 1800.00
Temporary flooring to ensure safe footing over tombstones 600.00
Decoration of gazebos etc to provide Victorian theme 195.00
Hire of silver band and saxophone group for community entertainment 300.00
    Children’s craft activities 75.00
Community programme and awareness material 2000.00
Costume Hire, consumables and sundries 500.00
    Street signage £200.00
    Total £5670:00
