An attempted child abduction in East Cheadle has sparked over 30 reports of suspicious activity, but none suggest any further crimes have taken place. The initial incident from 13th January has sparked interest through social media and the press that exacerbated the issue.
An attempt to quell the anxiety and provide some reassurance was made and the MEN published the attached on their site on Tuesday.
The messages from the Police are:
– we have received 34 calls reporting suspicious activity across Stockport
– they have all been thoroughly investigated, and so far we have nothing to suggest any further crimes have taken place
– we rely on witnesses coming forward and would treat all calls seriously
– there is nothing to suggest a serial offender across Stockport
– the current investigation is on-going and we are appealing for information
– extra patrols have been providing high visibility reassurance around schools at key times
Part of the article was in response to the calls the Police received when the e-fit was put out; it was of a middle aged white man, but the Police received calls about Asian women and young black men as being possible suspects for this.
The suspicious activity has ranged from a grandfather waiting to pick up their grandchildren from school, to someone driving past a school but talking on their mobile phone.
