Youth re-offending lowest on record in Stockport

by Lib Dem team on 5 February, 2015

In 2006/7 962 offences were committed by young re-offenders in Stockport. In 2012/13 (the latest figures we have) that number fell to just 154.

That figure represents a transformation. For ordinary people it means less crime, less anti-social behaviour and less fear. For the young offenders it means getting on the right path, sorting out their lives and not being dragged into a life of crime in which everyone suffers.

  • The latest re-offending rate for Stockport is 30.8%, compared to 34.6% one year ago.
  • The nearest statistical comparable authority is Trafford: 32.9%, down from 37.6% one year ago.
  • The national rate is 36.1%, compared to 35.5% one year ago.
  • There are fewer young offenders in the latest cohort (159), compared to 272 in the cohort one year earlier. 30.8% go on the re-offend. These 30.8% of young offenders go on to commit an average of 3.14 new offences each (in a one year follow up). Together they were responsible for 154 new offences during the follow up year.

In Stockport we’re seeing fewer young people commit crimes in the first place, and of those who do fewer go on to commit further crimes after they’ve been taken on by our Youth Offending Team.

The figures on youth crime are positive across the country, with big falls almost everywhere. Stockport is one of the best in the country, but pretty much everywhere we know that young people are drinking less, smoking less, committing fewer crimes, taking drugs less, getting pregnant less and having sex later than their parents’ and grandparents’ generations did.
