One year on – Cheadle’s verdict on Mary Robinson MP

by Lib Dem team on 6 May, 2016

Mark Hunter took 60% of the vote in Cheadle Hulme South

A year after the 2015 General Election the people of Cheadle constituency have had their first chance to give a verdict on our Conservative MP, Mary Robinson.

Across the parliamentary constituency as a whole the Lib Dems got 38% of the vote with the Conservatives on just 31%, Labour on 13, UKIP 8 and the Greens 3.

In Cheadle Hulme South ward, former MP Mark Hunter stood for the council against Stephen Robinson – an experienced councillor from South Ribble and Mary Robinson’s husband. The Lib Dem share of the vote went from 37% in 2015 to a huge 60% this year, with the Conservatives dropping from 35% down to just 23%.

“We hear again and again on the doorstep that people are fed up with an MP who seems to do very little and rarely bothers to keep in touch with residents – that message has come loud and clear through the ballot box,” said Iain.

Stop criticising for once and give her a chance – she has only been in the office for a year – she even mentioned the notorious junction in parliament the other day.

Mark Hunter will make a good councillor I am sure but just because he distributes more propaganda doesn’t mean he is any better..

I don’t think Mrs Robinson was elected on her reputation and, no matter what press she gets, I don’t think she will be rejected on it either.

When it comes to propaganda no one can hold a candle to the Tories. Huge respect for Mark Hunter, not many ex MPs would choose to start all over again as he has done. His vote shows a lot of people feel the same.

The comment about giving her a chance she’s only been elected a year miss the point . She parachuted in, won the seat with lots of sleazy Tory money and promised the Earth. Now she barely answers letters, is hardly ever in the constituency, and appears only if there’s a photo op. Let’s face it she just isn’t up to the job!

To be fair I think that most MPs are very much the same (spineless and self serving) – by and large we vote for the Party not the person.

Lets face you could put a red rosette on a pig in some wards and it would be voted in.

It’s this type of negative politics that puts so many off getting involved. As residents we were asked to vote for a local councillor last week based on their ability to deliver on local government issues. It wasn’t a “chance to give a verdict on our Conservative MP” and shouldn’t be portrayed as such. Now I certainly don’t have a particularly conservative viewpoint but when I contacted our MP on an issue I was invited to discuss it further at the constituency surgery a few days later. Our MP then spent the time to listen and then her assistant called me twice to update me on some research they had carried out on my issue. Mark was always helpful in the past too but was also under pressure with workload sometimes so let’s not keep trying to paint a picture of someone sitting on their hands. It doesn’t really paint anyone in a good light or lend anything useful to the debate.

Well done and Good luck to Mark but let’s not forget the electorate based on his performance as a M P chose someone else , get over it and stop criticising others.
Let Mark show us what he’s worth by getting things done as a councillor forget about the past.
The Lib Dems were told at the general electron that their views were not what the people of Stockport indeed the country wanted , wise up sort out the poor paving in Cheadle and finish the cycle track on Manchester Road (this track is a reminder of everything that is wrong with the Lib Dems).

  7. John M says:

Bruce, if a year is not enough how long should we give her ? In my company new recruits have a probationary period of 3 months, if they are not performing well we have the option to terminate the contact. Please tell me why an MP should have longer ?

  8. Hilda Berryman says:

And you wonder why no one gives a **** about todays politics!

  9. Susan Crewe says:

I wrote to our new MP very soon after the election and was very pleased with her detailed response.
