Welcome to Cheadle Mill residents

by Lib Dem team on 7 June, 2012

Across the UK there’s a shortage of housing, and without any huge developments, we see new properties being built – and sold or rented – across Cheadle and Gatley.

One such development has been a long time coming, but we can now welcome the new residents of Cheadle Mill to the village.

Planning permission was granted for forty two properties on the old works site at the end of Mill Lane back in 2005 (planning application 17470). But only recently have the first few properties been completed and residents moved in.

The Cheadle Mill development is at the far end of Mill Lane – turn off Manchester Road by the Alexandra Hospital and then keep on going to the end to get there. Although it’s a longer drive round, the new homes are a much shorter walk or cycle to the village centre via the path to Brook Street (past the Drill Hall).

Are they really keeping that ugly chimney ?…
Horrible industrial relics like this (as opposed to the ‘grander’ edifices – Houldsworth Mill, Heaton Chapel Warehouse…) should be demolished. It does nothing for the image of an otherwise ‘well-healed’ place like Cheadle.
The building of houses on the site ? – fine – providing anyone wants to live in the ‘back of beyond’ !

  2. Phil Johnson says:

    It might be “listed”

    Many chimneys are.

  3. Robert Taggart says:

    “LISTED”!
That chimney has absolutely no architectural or historical value. It be simply a blot on the landscape.
This heritage ‘lark’ is becoming ridiculous… thirty plus years ago far too many fine buildings were being destroyed by greedy developers. Now, anything remotely old has a preservation order slapped on it – irrespective of any merit or none.
Next ‘door’ – the old Barnes Hospital building – now that is worth saving (if anyone can find a productive use for it) – instead ? – that be allowed to go to ‘rack and ruin’ while a worthless pile of… bricks (!) be given a new ‘lease of life’ !
You could not make it up – MADNESS !

  4. Iain Roberts says:

I have no idea whether or not the chimney is listed, but it does look like the developers – for whatever reason – are retaining it.

  5. jean skitt says:

well,as people have bought some of these properties, it looks as if the old chimney has not put them off and maybe they prefer the relative solitude at the end of Mill Lane.

  6. brent sandiford says:

Do the new residents know the site was contaminated by Standard Chemicals?

  7. Trevor McLean says:

The Mill was of great historical interest and I wish it could have been kept as an industrial unit. I am glad that at least the chimney survived. Barnes Hospital would make a very good Old Peoples Home (in keeping with its origional intended purpose) or it could be a Hotel.

  8. Robert Taggart says:

    re:TMcL – re: The Mill/Chimney – you taking the piss ?

  9. Mike A says:

Its not the “back of beyond”. Its maybe 200yds from the village High Street. I suspect that the chimney was left because of the cost of demolition. If I were buying there I’d be asking about the maintainence of the chimney and who pays for it. At some point its going to need pointing and at the moment weeds have taken root in some of the upper mortar courses. A sure sign that work will be needed in the not too distant future.

  10. Bill Latham says:

Thinking of purchasing on of the apartments next to the town houses, but have reservations: 1). Should the builder go bust or god forbid fall ill will the site ever be completed?
2).Been told at present that the proposed future building works could go on for 2-5 years! and no finished road or road lighting? would be done until completion, it would feel like living on a building site.

    Any comments/advice/opinions would be welcomed.

    • Iain Roberts says:

Hi Bill, I can’t answer your question, but those are fair concerns. I’d suggest you knock on the doors of one or two people living there now and ask them what they think, as I know they’ve been working through the issues for some time.

      • Bill Latham says:

Thanks Iain for your comments, I believe the builder lives in one of the houses? My wife and I are 64 this year and the location is ideal for us, but we think it somewhat risky to ask potential buyers to purchase units without having some kind of final completion date for all works, as previously said this could go on for years.
I believe the building works are progressing as funds come in from the sale of completed apartments I can understand this to a point regarding cash flow etc,
The apartment we viewed was very nice but would require more monies for white goods, wardrobes etc, didn’t notice an entry intercom on main entrance door? Regardless will have to think about it all.
        Bill

I have just completed on the purchase of one of the top floor apartments. I have read the comments, yes it may be slightly risky, hopefully I have done my homework[ the last 4 months]
I have researched the prices in central M/C Didsbury etc. And I think this development has huge scope and is by far the best value for money. Four mins walk to the centre of the village, but in a semi rural setting.Building work is well under way with the rest of the site, the proposed plans look great, I am sure it will be a very special place, close to M/C , Didsbury etc. And as we all get older the Alex. Now the economy has picked up this site is to valuable not to be finished, either by this builder or one of the majors, who I have heard are very interested. Be brave buy now.
          I just have.

            Hi Steve,
We are in the process of buying one of the middle apartments, I agree with your comments regarding the location etc, although our solicitors have had numerous queries over the lease etc it looks likes things are finally moving forward.
We hope to complete mid April.
            Regards,
            Bill

  11. Jason says:

As the builder, I have read the comments with a great deal of interest. We do believe we are building what will be a special place, and quite unique.

In answer to queries whilst things have previously been slow going mainly due to a very slow housing market and poor economy. We now have sufficient funds available to build out the entire development over the next 18 months which is our intention.

It has been interesting the number of local people who come to watch daily progress on site, which it now underway.

Anybody interested in buying should contact Andrew Dawson’s in the village.

  12. Liz Senior says:

    Hi
I am interested in purchasing a property on this site. It looks to be brilliant eventually. I presently live in Didsbury.
Who shall I phone? Thanks Liz

  13. Ian says:

The Agent is Andrew Dawson in Cheadle.

  14. david woolf says:

we are living at what is now called “Cheadle Mill”. the rear of our property ;looks over the Micker Brook part of which is a weir and i think known as the Red Rock.
The concern we have is that whilst next to the pathway is a railing preventing access to the river, the opposite bank is completely open.
We have been told that for many years it was common for the youth to gather and walk on top of the weir and jump in to the water.
At the present time groups of 40 to 50 are common on a regular basis. There is obviously an extreme risk that someone will either be injured or killed. I am amazed that in these times where ” health and safety” is paramount that this dangerous area has not been railed off. No doubt when a disaster occurs then action will be taken!!

  15. jean says:

Love the potential of the site apart from the fact that there seems to be little provision for bin storage.
Most developers these days are required by planners to include storage facilities for both houses and flats but there is little indication of that being the case here.

  16. Does anyone know when the building work will begin on the half built houses next to the flats overlooking the creek. Also who are the builders.
I am looking at buying 13 Hearthstone Close which is right next to the half built houses. I am not sure if I want to live next to a building site. Any ideas about how long it will take to complete the row of houses and also who the management company is who will set the service or maintenance charge. Thanks
