Stockport Council agreed to buy the Edgeley Park football ground at a special meeting of the Council’s Executive today.
The purchase will help secure the future of Stockport County football club and of an important community asset in the ground itself. The Council will have a landlord/tenant relationship with the club. The rent paid by the club would cover the cost of the purchase so it won’t cost taxpayers a penny.
The plan to purchase the ground has been agreed by all four political groups on the council.
The decision to purchase the ground was made in a 13 minute meeting which you can watch here.

This is potentially good for County. I assume then that the council feel the club is sustainable and that, even with the low crowds they get, they can afford the rent?
Or, my cynical mind suggests, is the council banking on the fact that IF the club default, they can evict them and sell the land on to a developer for a VERY healthy profit?
Just asking…
We are happy that the club have a realistic and viable business plan so we fully expect and hope the club will remain at Edgeley Park for many years to come.
Not to forget the very successful Stockport Beer Festival held there every year!
“The rent paid by the club would cover the cost of the purchase so it won’t cost taxpayers a penny.”
This cannot be correct and will only happen if County pay continuously for the number of years needed to pay the council off. The council must be buying the ground up front?
And how long did it take to come to this decision, against the ongoing saga of the CPO of the Tatton Cinema in Gatley?
Why cannot the council do the same for the Tatton. The cinema was demolished with indecent haste and the car park shut off from public use.
H.T. Mclean: we are in progress with a compulsory purchase order for the Tatton. The big difference is that the owners of Edgeley Park were willing to sell for a fair price – that hasn’t been the case with the Tatton.
