Kings Avenue water problems

by Lib Dem team on 26 January, 2011

Anyone who’s visited Kings Avenue in Gatley recently might have noticed a section of pavement covered in wooden boards.

There’s a problem with a water leak from somewhere that’s leading to water pooling and then draining slowly into one of the gardens. A good deal of work has been done by the Council and United Utilities to identify where the problem is coming from (hence the hole in the pavement, the result of trial digs to explore further) but so far without success.

As I mentioned earlier today, the water network’s complex and the issue could lie with the Council, United Utilities or a private landowner.

Pam and I are pursuing the issue – we want to see a plan for how we get from where we are now (with lots of work having been done but the problem not cracked) to identifying the problem, who legally needs to sort it out and then getting it done.

  1. I wonder if this is a drainage problem. From the local topography I would guess that the drainage system in Kings Ave feeds into that of Nansen Rd. Assuming the drainage system was installed when the houses were built, it may have been around for about 80 years. If there are seperate surface water and foul systems one possibility could be that the surface water sytem is blocked or damaged causing water to exit the system at the wrong place. There are plenty of big trees lining the road capable of causing root damage to the drains.

I recently reported a pot hole for repair on Nansen Rd (outside No. 7), which had showed evidence of possible subsidence (which I shall monitor) that may have been caused by water exiting a drain incorrectly. On a seperate occasion last summer I also recall seeing drain jetting on Nansen Rd – presumably a temporary blockage. A CCTV camera survey of the drains would confrim eitherway.

One further possibility; the pool(s) located at the park to the back of Priest Avenue may be there becuase they are spring fed. It could be a problem arising from naturally elevated groundwater. The environment agency may be able to provide information on local groundwater trends from one of the numerous monitoring boreholes.

Hope this helps in some way.

Having said all that I did have UU out about 2 years ago when I found water in my stopcock box…a leaking main!

Hi Richard – many thanks for the information, which I’ll pass on to be considered.
